Milk in Bags

I found milk in a bag fresher as well. I could open just one bag at a time, freeze the other two and then when the first bag was getting low, just pop a frozen bag into the fridge and it was thawed by the time I needed it. Here, the milk is sold with about 8 to 10 days time left before it expires and it doesn't always last to its expiry date - and never lasts beyond it. I end up throwing away so much milk that has gone sour that it is ridiculous. It doesn't matter if it is in a carton or in a plastic jug. My husband will drink milk for about a week after it is opened. He says he can taste it going off after that and won't drink it. I guess I could buy it in the half gallon instead of the gallon but it is more expensive and tends to go sour even faster in the cartons. Oh, I want bagged milk back - I never had a problem with it going sour.

That has been my experience exactly! I have poured more milk down the drain since I moved to NJ than I ever did with bagged milk in Canada. I find that with the plastic jug I am always wary...I routinely sniff before I pour and if it smells even a little off I find I just can't bring myself to drink it. My husband suggested buying smaller containers but then we're at the grocery store every day buying milk!! Just one more thing to adjust to. :)

I grew up in Wisconsin (the Dairy State of the United States). My parents could buy milk in a bag at the Kwik Trip (a gas station convenience store) or from some of the local dairies. According to their website, Kwik Trips can be found in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, so for those lucky Canaliens in those states, go enjoy some wonderful milk in a bag.

I miss the milk in bags, I'm glad the kids are a bit older now though, I can just imagine how much milk would of gotten spilt with little ones trying to use those big jugs of milk here. We don't have any problems with milk going bad and we do try and make sure we get the ones with the farthest best before date on it. But with 4 kids we go through about 4 gallons a week sometimes more, so it really never has a chance to go sour.

Here in Nunavut we have milk in bags! I had no idea it was becoming archaic and disappearing. I grew up in Ontario with milk in bags and now have them here. I never have any idea what's going on in the rest of Canada.

P.S. 1L of milk here is $8 at the cheapest.

I was in Nunavut with the Air Force back in 2004. Crazy expensive!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I never had them, so certainly wouldn't miss them. When visiting my parents in Ontario, where they have them, they drive me crazy. They are always leaning up against something in the fridge. You move something, they flop over. These are the ones that aren't in the container. I think they're a total waste of resources. Three bags, inside another bag.

I tell ya i don't miss the milk in bags one bit ... when i need milk i pop the top off the jug and pour ... no more cleaning our the jug and then slipping the bag in there ..then the whole thing of finding something to snip the corners off because someone always moves the scissors or the little snip thingy ... and then you have to go on a search ... or you end up using a knife and leave a messed up opening ... all just to add a few drops to your coffee ....

nah a jug you just pop the top off and pour ..run out grab another pop the top and pour .. so much easier

You're telling me! I will NOT miss the insane prices here. I used to live in one of the more expensive communities. It killed me paying $21 for 12 cans of pop. :crying: At least it's only $13 where I live now!

Which community were you in? Did you live here or just visit for work? I wonder if we know any of the same people...weird.

And then they used to put them in another plastic bag!
