I Have Two First Names "So Confusing"

Hello Vj,

'SOS'

I just filled out the I-485 form, however, i am a little bit confused with my answer in the 'given name and middle name'. I have 2 first names that i put in the given name, put my papa's name as middle name, and my new family name (husband name). I was told that uscis only accepts 3 names 'is this true?'. Now i am confused of which name i will retain and drop, the second name of my first name or my papa's name.

Is there any vj member that had the same confusions as mine who figured the right thing to do.

Your answer is very much apreciated.

Thank you.

We filed my I-485, I-765 and I-131 following the Philippine naming convention

(FIRST NAME - I have 2 first names as well) (FATHER'S LAST NAME) (HUSBAND'S LAST NAME)

I've read on VJ that most people don't have problems doing this (already got their AOS approved) but when my husband and I went to my biometrics appointment, I was told that we were supposed to follow the U.S. naming convention - you can only change your last name to your husband's name. Your middle name will stay the same. If you want to follow the Philippine naming convention, you'd have to file a petition for name change at your local court. The lady still processed my biometrics using the name we used on the I-485. She said it'll be up to the USCIS official who handles our case to decide which name to be used on the green card... :(

I-130 / IR-5 TIMELINE (Petition for Mother)

i myself has 2 given names and eversince i never like to use them both but was forced to when i started travelling due to passport purposes.... so when i got married here, i finally had the opportunity to drop the other one during the filing of our marriage license. its true that dropping any of those names requires court order or some sort.. so since the marriage license is a recognized legal document, that was when i decided to do it. we have already filed our AOS and all has been ok so far.

first name, former surname as middle name now, hubby's surname

u may not want to drop ur other given name but since i do, this is how we did it. am sure u will get it sorted. just rather confusing i guess for the american system since they arent used to two given names.

You sound so worried. :star: I have three first names. M_ _ _ F_ _ _ A_ _ _ _ _ _. Now that I am married, I am using my three first names, the last name of my father, and my husband's last name.

The USCIS has written them all correctly in the three NOAs and biometrics letter. I hope they keep doing that.

Be happy.

I have two first names too & I didn't encounter any problem. I came w/ K1 visa, applied for greencard in Aug 2008 & my greencard came with 4 names [2 first, middle (my maiden name), and my married last name]. I even have 4 names in my drivers license.

Don't be confuse, I agree with all the responses, you should be fine. Anyway, when the time comes and you'll be eligible to apply for the US Citizenship, you will be given a chance for a name change and it's free! You can drop your other first name if you want or whatever names that you will want to use in the future; you do it when you apply for Naturalization. Glad that everything's okay now with you and your spouse. Good luck on the AOS process.
