What name do I book my international ticket in?

Hello,

My husband & I are traveling abroad later this year. I have an Australian Passport, which has my maiden name on it, I now have a Conditional Green Card/Permanent Residency Card, which has my married name on it.

Question: what name do I book the ticket in? My maiden name or my married name. I will be traveling with both my passport and permanent residency card (and a copy of our marriage certificate...haha, never too organised!).

cheers

You will need to book the ticket in the name on your passport. It would not be a bad idea to take a copy of your marriage certificate with you in case it comes up upon reentering the US (that is when your PR/Green Card will be inspected). Have a great trip.

Thanks Otto and Karin,

We are so excited! Thanks for the advise, we would hate for problems to arise due to simple oversight! :)

Your ticket must go with the name in your passport - so maiden name.

You still bring your GC but also bring the marriage certificate.

We took care of that with my wife's home country consulate. Put a sealed stamp in her passport with her married name in it and we also registered our marriage in her country. Purchased our tickets using her married name, no problem at the airport when she showed her passport with that stamp in it. No problems in coming back when her green card matched her stamp and ticket.

Since you are not traveling till later this year, why not get your passport changed into your married name? From memory, I was able to do this through the Australian consulate inLA, by mail, for no charge. Admittedly, that was quite a few years ago, and things may have changed. There is a website for Australian passport application with all the info you will need. I no longer have the website address, but I'm sure you can google for the link as well as I can LOL.

Not saying you can't travel with your "maiden" name passport and "married" name GC (with marriage certificate) - but, why make life difficult? JMHO

hi auscal,

thanks for the advise. i hadnt thought about getting a new passport issues. you are right, the process is pretty straight forward. at this stage im still going to travel in my maiden name, carrying my pr card and marriage certificate on me as i only got a new passport issued 2 years ago (and its valid for another 8 years).

also, someone mentioned getting their wife's passport 'stamped/sealed' indicating a name change. i am thinking that maybe that process is country specific as i havent been able to find any information about that specifically for australian passport holders.

Everything on the board is country, state, or USCIS office specific, was just telling you what we did to simplify buying tickets, especially with credit cards, and coming back to the USA. Just contact your consulate for the latest information, feel that is the best way.

Getting married in this country is not exactly easy for a girl, just all kinds of name changes required, but most places are accustomed to it and accommodating.

If you change your AUSTRALIAN passport within a year of being married it's free. You'll actually "gain" 2 years I suppose because the new passport will be 10 years AND it's free. If it wasn't free i'd wait. It's called a "gratis" passport. Here's some info: http://www.usa.embassy.gov.au/whwh/PassportsUS.html

Yep, that's what I did :-) thanks for providing the link. Although, the expiry date on my new passport was still the same as the one on the old passport - so, no free years LOL.
