Right. And that 'common path' serves them well. Go by any Hindu temple during the holy season and 1/2 the cars in the lot will be lux brands. Their owners, more often than not, have no knowledge of popular American culture and only halting English. Y'all may make fun of Appu for running a 7-11 or giving his whole life to fixing an underperforming Econolodge, but he does well for himself and his family. Very well.

Ever see an Indian who didn't drive a Japanese car brand name? Indians tell me American cars break down easier so they'd never buy one.

The reason I even ask is because like many migrants to Canada, Australia or the US, my folks moved to Aus in the 60's with little more than the clothes on their back and $10 to their name. Yet managed to build something for themselves and us kids. Chilling, pity, blaming others or breaking the law was simply not an option in my household, with the police being the last thing I feared.

Now, I am not saying everyone in the ghettos is lazy, however, one must ask why so many people come to America with nothing, and are able to build something for themselves. Yet folks residing in ghettos cannot even take care of their own area. Cannot pick up a paintbrush and take care of their house. Refuse to use schools that are provided for free to them, even with schools in ghettos now receiving more funding than schools in wealthier areas.

Fix that mess in attitude up and America will have millions of tax paying consumers, that are also functional members of society. The number of people simply chilling in ghettos during the day is bloody ridiculous. In 2010, I don't buy the 'I've been hard done by' for even a second. These folks have opportunities that many, including my parents, could have only dreamed of.

Now why can't you articulate your arguement like that all the time? :P I doubt we'd have 2-3 page discussions of who is a bigger douche

To respond to your post though, I think that argument is substantive on the surface, but doesn't take into account the systemic effects of being in that sort of environment for generations. In the 1960's in the U.S., minorities were still discriminated against, be it concious or subconciously. Simply stated, a black family in the 1960's had significantly fewer opportunites than a european or australian family immigrating to the U.S.. The situation we are in today is a function of the despair and discrimination minorities faced for generations. Yes, today these official barriers have been removed, but what about the effects of their environment. The schools are absolute #######, there are no high paying jobs in the neighborhood, and you have rampant crime. For soemoen who wants to better their situation, the deck is definitely stacked against them.

How long is the shelf-life for this excuse?

How does it answer the trend that most of the Problems are getting worse not better.

YOu might want to check your numbers on Schools, in many places including my area inner city or "at risk" schools receive not equal the amount... but twice the amount of money per child as the Suburbs here in Charlotte.

I have in my twenty years in Charlotte watched areas "TURN" into ghettos as the demographics changed from nice middle class neighborhoods that I think any of us would be proud to call home into run down havens of crime. (Including indoor shopping malls).

Google Eastland mall Charlotte nc if you doubt me.

Families are the foundation of communities, federal Programs have actually destroyed Black families in the effort to help.

Whats the answer?

More programs no doubt, as we can't resist subsidizing bad life choices in the hopes of "lifting someones burden".

Clearly, we should continue to focus on yesterday's energy resources and not waste any time thinking about tomorrow. The good old days were in the past and that's what we're looking to get back to, yes?

It's far more realistic to run the country with sailing ships and power our homes with the burning of dung. Obama is speeding us to the 19th century.

Instead let's all fantasize about renewable energy sources (can't count hydro because the environmentalist are against it) which account for .05% of world consumption will somehow power future development. For a more balanced view at least try reading the pros/cons of energy development.

Oh Boy - Green Jobs.

If it's to 'install something' - good lord - can we at least make sure , that the thing to 'install', is made in the USA?

I'm a fan of 'derivative economy' - so if it's made in the USA, well, that's more jobs, right?

#### all on installing something that was imported..

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Fossil fuels are a finite source of energy. The future is NOT in fossils. You can wiggle all you want but that fact remains. We either lead the exploration of the future energy sources or we'll depend, once again, on others for our energy needs. Don't know but America used to be a country that leads. Now it devolves to a country that is being lead. A dependent country at that.

Sure, let do the research and surveying when there's only 1 year of coal reserves left for the world to use. I doubt in one year, it won't provide enough time to study, build plants, etc...Thought there was only 140 years left or so...

1 year of reserves? Not even close. This is just in the U.S.

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/energyexplained/i...e=coal_reserves

When scientists estimate how much coal, petroleum, natural gas, or other energy sources there are in the United States, they use the term reserves. Reserves are coal deposits that can be mined using today's mining methods and technology. Experts estimate that the United States has about 265 billion tons of coal reserves. If we continue to use coal at the same rate as we do today, we will have enough coal to last 285 years. This vast amount of coal makes the United States the world leader in known coal reserves.
