My 2001 FORD TAURUS has a U.S. EPA NLEV Compliant Sticker under the hood stating that my car is compliant, do I still need to get a compliance letter?

don't quote me but I think you do...

MY car was manufactured in the US and imported to Canada and I was told that I would need the letter to import in BACK to the states.... I got the Compliance letter, as well as the Recall letter

I would say get one anyway, because while CBP may not require it, your state may.

again...don't quote me...but hubby said you need a current Driver's Abstract to get a Washington state licence...?? (he has been known to be wrong before!!!)

I've got a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu that was manufactured in Fairfax, Kansas, and has stickers like yours...but I recall reading POE reviews where the border patrol guard was none too pleased about the lack of an actual compliance letter. It MAY be worth your while to chance it, but it's up to you.

whole process is frustrating as each POE officer may play by a different set of rules at times!!

It's very true. Good rule of thumb for the whole process.

It's not just one sticker, it's two. You have the EPA sticker under the hood, but do you also have the DOT sticker in the door? link

If the stickers are present then no letter is needed but it certainly doesn't hurt to have it anyway, as trailmix (and others) have suggested.
