The fact is that the big ticket items sold in places like Walmart are often at the bottom of the specification range for that item. It's cheap because it doesn't have the quality or the features of similar items.

the hidden story in this is - why we can't make those steel girders ourselves.

i considered taking work with the inspection company that is qualifying fabrication practices on this project last year. after learning that the original inspection contractor had been thrown off the job for rejecting the weld quality across the board, i spoke to some friends in the industry. it seems that the job was awarded to the low bid contractor, and that the low bidder was producing welds that failed ultrasonic inspection in approximately 30% of the areas of inspection. in short, the welds were not clean and sound, in accordance with the inspection criteria.

the general contractor hired an engineering firm to "re-engineer" the bridge to account for the failed performance. this engineering company acepted the "as-built" conditions as suitable for use. the inspection company refused to sign off, so they were replaced with a more accomodating concern.

would i put my stamp on this job? hell no. it's garbage from the low bid contractor, and will fail prematurely. and that's a fact, jack.

Not really. They sell the same brands and models you can find any any big box store.
