K1 Visa and University Enrollment/Tuition Rates

Hi Guys,

I am just wondering if Sean can start attending college in the US right away after he gets his social security number, or if he needs to wait for a period of time. I know in the US when you move from state-to-state, you have to live in your curent state for 1 year before you can get in-state tuition. Since he is coming from Canada, will be have to pay international tuition (which is ridiculously high) or can he pay in-state since he immigrated on the K1 Visa? Would he need to wait 1 year from AOS or 1 year from the date he activated his Visa?

I doubt he wants to start back to school any time soon, but I'd like for him to finish up. He has a 2 year college degree and I'd like him to get his bachelor's finished.

I think it would be 1 year from when he began his residence in Florida, but he'd have to pay international rates right now because he doesn't have immigrant status yet.

I came in on a cr-1, but my school based my residency on my wifes! I just had to produce a document proving she had resided in VA for at least 1 yr--think I brought in a copy of her State taxes, and they gave me in state rates! There was another post similar to this on another section of VJ, and it seems to vary from school to school, so one has to contact each school individually to get a response

Well that would be nice to get the in-state rate based on my residency. I am putting the cart before the horse because he isn't ready to go back yet. I am the one who is really enthusiastic about school not him. I already have his degree all planned out!

I hated school,lol But like any other thing, just get it over with,lol Like I said, contact each school, as they may have different requirements

I would check the schools out and see. The GC really doesn't take that long after you get married, so make sure you have as much ready for that to send it off ASAP. I'm waiting for mine for everything. I won't even get a fishing license because why pay those high international fees? Best of luck. Maybe you'll find a school he can start in early enough.
