Cheap Colombian vacation?

I am more adventurous, just like to go with no reservations and see what I can find. Wife likes reservations and security. So she picked two hotels off the net and called them. First place was 480 million COP per night, second was 980 million COP per night. Did look up boards on this subject, they claim you can find a good hotel for like 30-50 bucks per night.

We got into a discussion on star rating, I never cared for five star hotels here, way too stuffy for my blood, like my blue jeans, but feel awkward being served by a guy in a tux. Or trying to refill my water glass when I am sipping from it. Three star is good enough for me. But she tells me down there, a three star hotel doesn't even give you a bed or a private wash room. I got the impression that we would be sleeping in a pile of hay and have to walk out in the middle of the street to do what nature makes us do.

Just said, go ahead and make reservations, we can dip into our savings, we are not getting any younger, and our kids can earn their own money like we had to. But no, way too much money to spend. We are staying with her mom in Bogota, so we elected to play it by ear and check with travel agencies down there.

Last year we wanted to go to a state park, zero openings, hell, let's go anyway, in the motorhome, can always find a place to park, have food, self contained, but when we got there, a beautiful spot was just opened with a last minute cancellation. I even popped in Yellowstone Park with a last minute cancellation. Always been lucky that way. Maybe we will pop over to Caracas instead and visit her son, who knows, more fun that way. Maybe Chavez will arrest us as American spies and torture us, sounds exciting.
