All About Ghada

I met Ghada almost ten years ago, she’s a slight woman, petite and small with a soft voice and radiant smile made all the more valuable by the fact that it’s rarely seen. Her face is usually placid, displaying little emotion beyond a sufic acceptance of life’s ups and downs. Ghada’s son, like many of the children from my husband’s village in jnoob (South Lebanon) has a genetic disorder. When I met her she told me about it and explained that he would probably not live past four.

By some miracle of modern medicine he lived to be ten. This summer Ghada took her son Hussain back to the village to be buried. She took him back with her 3 year old son Hassan, who has also been diagnosed with the same condition. It’s been over a decade since Ghada had been home, she was unable to celebrate the liberation of her village just a few short years ago and she wanted to take some time there to heal. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place. At least, it was.

It is now at the heart of fighting, right next door to what is being labled the “heart of hizbullah” Bint Jbeil. It’s so strange to hear about these places you know so well all over the news. Most of the Shi’a Lebanese you meet in Dearborn, MI areBint Jbeilees. There are some from Tibneen a Ba’albaki here and there and an occasional Yarouni, but Bint Jbeil is represented everywhere.

Like thousands of Lebanese Americans, Lebanese Australians, Lebanese-French and regular old Lebanese Ghada was trapped when the fighting began. As Israeli aggression pushed closer to her village they called for the villagers to flee. They knew that whether they left or stayed they were taking a risk. Already Israel has played this wicked game before. They tell the villagers to leave and then fire from the sky on their cars as they stream out killing families, traumatizing children. The last one, which went seriously underreported was the massacre of Marwaheen, but believe me dear reader this was only one of many such incidences.

Ghada, who had brought the body of her ten year old son home to bury, got into her car with three year old Hassan and her husband and in a convoy with 10 other families they drove slowly North white flags streaming in the warm Lebanese breeze.

An Israeli plane fired and hit the car ahead of them. Ghada saw the windshield of the car crack, and blood splatter everywhere then an arm came flying backward into her own windsheild the force breaking the windshield and splattering more blood and body parts landed on their car and the soil. Inna lillah wa inna ilayhi rajioon. Hassan is back home now, safely. But he hasn’t spoken in a week. Not. one. word.

Three year old Hassan brought the war home. God only knows if he will ever speak again. YOu think, maybe, Hassan is terrorized? THAT is terrorism.

Just a few short months ago I went to visit my fiance. We decided to take tour of the South. The funny thing is a tour of the south means war prison camps and posts and where it brings sadness and joy. Sadness for what had happened and joy that is is over or we thought.

We took a tour of a prison camp that was ran by the israelies. An ex prisoner gave the tour. It makes him feel better that people know the torment that happened there. The rooms where small where many people where put in and lock behind Metal doors. The "Solitary Confinment" was a metal box that was about 3 to 4 feet high where only one person can fit. We saw where people where hung and beaten. This happened during the occupation by the israel in south lebanon. The people who are still alive are scared.

Later we went to Bint Jbeil Just because I know so many people from there originally. Beautiful town that is no longer anymore.

What can you say, how do you justify anything. Allah Akbar.

What isreal is doing is a crime of war. it is evil and they need to need to be stopped. Haiffa would not had any problems if Isreal wasn't demolishing lebanon. Is lebanon suppose to sit there and do nothing. Obviousily they need to do something so the Israely people can stand up and say to there government thats enough. That is really the only way to end this war. Trust me, if the bombing of lebanon would stock, the rockets would stop. it is as simple as that.
