Hey.

So yesterday a mom came in my office with her two children, her 14 year old son and her....at least...2 year old son. I mean I would say he was 2. He was running around and talking...

So, she is talking to me, and mid sentence, scooops up her son, ups her shirt, takes out her breast and starts breast feeding her 2 year old son without missing a beat.

1. Is that not a bit weird?

2. Is that not a bit OLD to be breast feeding?

Not a mom yet, so I really don't know...but I felt akward to be honest. I mean...she wasn't even trying to be discreet about it!

I was breastfed until I was 2 and here in Brazil it's not uncommon.... I really want to be able to do that too.

I don't see anything wrong with that and it may be a cultural thing but this value I want to keep.

I wonder if it's a cultural thing - this woman was from a foreign country - so that must be it!! I'm not sure from where.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

I don't know how reliable this source is, but

Some people are upset, if not shocked, to learn that children can nurse for so long. Curiously, these same people are hardly surprised to see kindergartners sucking their thumbs or fingers. The truth is that the need to suck, like many other dependency needs, does not disappear overnight, and often lasts longer than we as a society are willing to accept. Indeed, the average age of weaning around the world is 4.2 years.

4.2 YEARS?? omigosh, i was in KINDERGARTEN and writing my name by then!

i am just imagining lunch time while the other kids are having bologna sandwiches, i gotta wait for mom to pop in from work so i could get my milk...:lol::lol:

breastfeeding is all well and good but if they are potty-trained, got teeth and can tell you what they want for dinner, i think its time to heating up a can of beefaroni or something.

Breastmilk is best for babies up to 2 years of age....advantageous and very economical...comes in handy, beautiful and safe containers  ...no need to sterilize...no extra baggage ^_^

-------

jo&john's journey:

03/10/04: Met John at Yahoo! Messenger; start of a good relationship

03/30/04: I became his girlfriend

05/26/04: John excited for his trip to the Philippines to see me and set the direction

05/27/04: John on board Delta Airlines from DFW (Texas) to San Francisco

05/28/04: John on board China Airlines from San Francisco to Taipei

05/29/04: John on board China Airlines from Taipei to Manila; I met him at the NAIA (Ninoy AquinoInternational Airport);

the rest IS magic! We became more in love!

05/30/04: We got engaged! The remaining 3 days were full of good memories and still crystal clear for me

06/03/04: John left for Taipei on board China Airlines; reached LA then DFW same day; I miss my honey;

we both wait for the approval of my annulment petition (series of court hearings and procedures; constant follow-up to

expedite the process; delays because of holidays, official leaves of court personnel, etc; judge is meticulous,

no short cuts):John had been very supportive and is still.

03/23/06: Regional Court Decision out: Declaring absolute nullity of my marriage. We were very happy! The long wait was over!

Actually, the decision/resolution made was dated February 23, 2006. It took a month for editing, finalization, etc by the

court stenographers, clerk of court, etc.

Upon receipt of the Decision, I flew to Manila (I’m from Iloilo City) and personally hand-carried the Decision to the

Solicitor-General (was praying Sol-Gen won’t object to the decision; RTCs give 15 days for Sol-Gen to appeal)

04/07/06: No appeal from Solicitor-General. RTC recorded the decision in the Book of Entries of Judgment (as final and executory).

ENTRY OF JUDGMENT signed by the CLERK OF COURT. This was then forwarded to Local Civil Registrar.

Annotation was done to my Marriage Certificate. Submitted the Annotated (with Annulment Remarks). Marriage Certificate

to NSO (National Statistics Office) for authentication and on SECPA (Security Paper). I got my SECPA annotated marriage

certificate after 3 weeks.

04/10-16: Holy Week; no office

04/17/06: Submitted requirements to RTC for issuance of Annulment Decree

04/18/06: Got my DECREE OF DECLARATION OF NULLITY OF MARRIAGE (annulment process took 1 year and 10 months from

filing of petition to getting the decree) SIGNED BY THE JUDGE! Sent remaining pertinent documents to John needed

for the K1 petition. Both of us were elated!

04/22/06: John sent I-129F to Texas Service Center

As for the age issue...personally I think if a child is able to walk around and talk he/she is WAY too old for breastfeeding! Time to dry up the milk mom!

BABIES NEED BREAST MILK UNTIL 12 MONTHS OF AGE. THEY SHOULD NOT BE DRINKING COWS' MILK. At least both my kids were walking before they were 1 year old.

In terms of breastfeeding in toddlerhood, as someone else said earlier, the World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding at least until 2 years of age if not beyond. If anyone is interested in informed reading, WHO has plenty of information on their site:

http://www.who.int/child-adolescent-health...t_exclusive.htm

As to people complaining about breastfeeding in public, that IS what breasts were made for, you know. Although I agree in being discreet and not showing flesh when nursing.

It is cultural as far as I can tell....

I'll post some information about it and then the source if you want to read more!

Breastfed Babies Have Reduced Chance of Obesity

The path to becoming an overweight teenager may start with the very first meal they every have. Two new studies published in the May 16th issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that breastfeeding significantly reduces the risk of becoming overweight by the teen years.

In a study by Harvard researchers, the longer infants were breast-fed, the less likely they were to be overweight in

adolescence.

http://www.breastfeeding.com/reading_room/...eaner_kids.html

How long should a mother breastfeed?

A mother and her baby should breastfeed for as long as they wish to breastfeed. The American Academy of Pediatrics currently (2005) recommends: "Pediatricians and parents should be aware that exclusive breastfeeding is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months of life and provides continuing protection against diarrhea and respiratory tract infection. Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child." * As solids are introduced, usually around the middle of the first year, your baby will shift his primary source of nutrition from your milk to other foods.

All the benefits of human milk--including nutritional and health--continue for as long as your baby receives your milk. In fact, as your baby takes less human milk, these advantages are condensed into what milk is produced. Many of the health benefits of human milk are dose related, that is, the longer the baby receives human milk, the greater are the benefits.

as to about breastfeeding, might be natural, doesnt mean everyone wants to see some kid suckin teat while shopping or at a restaurant. I get jealous at those times and my wife gives me stern look "NO WAY!" be polite n cover up... quit makin James jealous. deal?
