Reven- 6-18 months to process...Huh?

I thought it only took a few weeks......for a passport....

From my experience: 2 weeks for a Canadian one....

And from other VJers experiences: (see the passport thread on the N-400 boards)....1 week (expedited) to 4-6 weeks (normal) for an American one...

Lol..And it took me 6 weeks to get my son's original birth certificate.....(that's another story...it got lost in the mail...sent to wrong address...)....

But yeah..good to know that a baby can have just a birth certificate and travel with no problems while you are waiting for the passports....

Btw..There are different specifications for the Canadian and American passports...So check accordingly......

As well, you need your baby's birth certificate in order to apply for a passport.....So you definitely need that first!....

Good luck with that for your baby later on.....(btw..I still think it's a girl...lol..)

Really? Only 2 weeks? I thought baby needed a Cdn citizenship card (takes 6-12 months) before they can apply for Cdn passport?

Your baby will be born in Canada right? Therefore all you will need is their Canadian birth certificate. The cert of citizenship is only for Canadians born out of Canada - to prove their citizenship as they have no Canadian birth certificate :)

Easy peasy!

Reven-It depends on where your baby is born.....

If your baby is born in Canada.....Then all is needed is a Canadian birth certificate...

Timeline for Canadian passport:

Canadian birth certificate receving time (?? weeks) + Canadian passport processing time (1-2 weeks in-person in Canada)....

If your baby is born in Canada...apply for a Canadian passport first...much easier that way....lol...

But if your baby is born in the USA.....A US birth certificate and a Canadian Citizenship Card is needed...

Timeline for Canadian passport:

American birth certificate receiving time (?? weeks..varies..) + Canadian Citizenship card (?? months..varies..) + Canadian passport processing time (1-2 weeks in-person in Canada)....

If your baby is born in the USA...apply for a US passport first...much easier that way....lol...

Canadian Citizenship Cards are mainly given to those who are...

1) Became a Canadian Citizen through Naturalization (lol..like I did as a child...became Canadian through naturalization)

2) Became a Canadian Citizen through birth abroad (or whatever else they call it in Canada) from a Canadian parent (like my son..born in the USA...)

And those who are born in Canada get Canadian birth certificates....No need for Canadian Citizenship Cards...!....

Hope this helps too. Good luck.

Lol..On that note above...

I find it really funny that...both me and my son are Canadians....

But we both don't have Canadian birth certificates!....

Canadian Citizenship cards will have to do...

I have mine...(from when I was a child)....

My son still has to get his (when he is old enough to decide for himself)....

Lol...We better not lose those though!...They are harder to replace than Canadian birth certificates!...

Uggh....I wonder what would happen if I lost all my "birth" documents..

-Foreign overseas birth certificate, Canadian Citizenship Card and Naturalization Certificate, American Naturalization/Citizenship Certificate...

What a nightmare to replace... And it would cost a fortune to replace such too!

I wouldn't even know where to begin...lol...

Well my friend definitely doesn't have time to get her baby a passport. She just went to fill out the birth certificate stuff on Tuesday (whatever that means). By the time she actually gets the BC and then goes and does all the passport stuff, well it would be cutting it close for our trip.

I'll let her know that all she needs is the baby's BC and a letter from Daddy saying it's ok to bring the baby overnight.

Thanks everyone, especially Ant :)

Peachy-No problem...Glad to be able to help you and your friend out here...:)

By the way....If your friend gets a letter from Daddy.....Might want to have it notarized/certified too....Just in case the border guards get paranoid...lol.....

Good luck on her trip and good luck with the wedding plans....
