I've come to realize that the Garden State has the most absurdly named towns in the entire 50 United States.

Even Schenectady NY isn't as bad as the lame-assed cities in Jersey.

Recently, the entire data-hosting/colocation industry for high frequency trading has been absolutely exploding in the northern New Jersey area.

NYSE/Euronext is opening a huge new colo site this summer in Mahwah, about 25 miles NW of NYC. Nasdaq has had its site in Carteret, about 25 miles SW of the city. And 3rd party non-exchange providers, most notably Savvis and Equinix, are sprouting up in towns like Secaucus (just across the Hudson from midtown) and Weehawken (don't know and and don't care where the ** that is).

What is the MATTER with these damn people?? Can't they name their towns normally, with reasonable spelling and pronunciation? Geez, what the hell is wrong with Springfield or River City or even Kalamazoo - names I can remember and not have to look up on Google every time I want to spell them? The Midwest may be bland, but at least it's user-friendly.

####### is wrong with Carteret.

ps. data centers are exploding in central jersey and the greater philly area as well. i believe savvis has a big facility in a philly burb.

Jersey is where it's at. I think it's a combination of (a) 9/11 making everyone terrified of putting all their trading resources in NYC (b ) more available land for low rise facilities with ample power/cooling/generator capacity (c ) proximity to the screen traders and remaining floor traders in midtown and lower Manhattan (d) the absolute explosion in algorithmic trading that is looking for a home. There was tons of dark fiber installed going back to the dotcom era, and now it's all being lit up.

It's happening in Chicago too with the futures industry here, but less frenzied than in NJ.

The TUNNEL project is a big (but understated) part of it. Think Manhattan is close today? Wait till the project is completed, pretty much all of northern and central NJ will be single-seat accessible to downtown. Work has begun (thank you, socialist Obama) and is slated to end in 2013 (so maybe more like 2020?).

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
