I'm kinda po'd. My husband's cousin went to Cuba and posted pictures on her Facebook of them being tourists. Truly disgusts me that people go there to be tourists knowing what the natives go through.

Unfortunately, we could say the same thing for almost any poor country Mal. I know it sucks, but the revenue they get from tourism helps them somewhat... even if their government is corrupt and their politicians pocket part of the money.

Nope, all tourist dollars go straight to the government. The people don't see a dime. I guess what is different, for me, is that I am Cuban.

communism I know it sounds bad but the people would still be worse off without the tourist revenue... only because then the government would have to cut back on programs to replace the lost income. In a socialist/communist state, that's how it works unfortunately. It's a lose/lose situation.

To your point though, I never understood how people could have a clear conscience about vacationing in luxury resorts with the state of poverty of the people in the country. I would feel guilty for having the extra money to vacation with and feel like instead I should have donated it.

Oh & Mal ~ a really awesome professor of mine is Cuban and just retired from the university last year to move back to Miami. He has every intention of going back to Cuba when that "sinvergüenza" is dead he said
