A friend of mine was flying United and missed her flight due to customs, and they gave her seat away and rebooked her but she had to pay for the fees. United Airlines is really an evil airline, I hate them with passion. It might be just them though.

United is a horrible airline.

Yeah, I typically try to avoid the BIG airlines. Sometimes it can't be helped, but I find one gets better service on the mid-sized ones like AirTran, Frontier, Midwest etc. Alaska Air is the only one of the "big" airlines I actually like. I use the rest only when it's cheap and/or convenient. I think I've used them ALL at some point in the past year and a half...

Hey... how do you guys avoid the BIG airlines??? I find that Air Canada is the only airline I can take from Toronto that goes direct into BWI...

But frankly, they've been pretty good to me this year and I can't complain too much....

:)

am looking forward to having options open up to me regarding flights in the US...

It really depends what you're willing to go through to avoid specific airlines. Westjet is getting more presence in the US so sometimes we fly with them when they have a sale and there's a reason to fly directly into Toronto. Southwest is our preferred airline because they have such great prices and I prefer flying in and out of Buffalo. It's a nice small airport and you don't have to battle your way through city traffic. Sometimes I will look at an airport's website to see which airlines fly in and out of it. I periodically peruse the smaller airports to see who uses them because you usually get a better deal when avoiding the main hubs. Plus the carriers change periodically. For instance, Allegiant (like Westjet) only used to fly out of the smaller airports and now they're moving on to the major ones. So now you have another low-cost alternative.

Sometimes you can't avoid the big airlines, though, since they're the only carrier you have available into and out of certain areas.

When flying into BWI from Canada I use Southwest from Buffalo. Living in T.O., though, is a bit more of a hassle. When you're in Oakville or Burlington it's easier just to cross the border.

Yeah, like Krikit, I always fly FROM the States. I drive down to Seattle then fly out from there. Costs me half as much. My flight from Vancouver to Montreal was $545 CDN after taxes. Compare that to the flight I (stupidly) canceled last week from Seattle to Baltimore for $218 CDN, after taxes.

Canada only has two National airlines, which really allows them to gouge you. And then there's the ridiculous taxation on airline tickets up here...

It's true. AS a person who doesn't drive or own a car (yet!) the driving into buffalo is not an option for me. So, AC it is... my ticket this trip was less than 300$ for a one way ticket my first one way ticket ever!!!!

:D

Yea, Alaska airlines is the way for us when travelling in the US, did the whole cheap flight on Allegiant Airlines to Las Vegas from Bellingham, didn't like it.

My advice and any advice I have for everyone is be there for your flight as early as possible, Air Canada is known to loose luggage as well (Used to work for them, I know what happens to your luggage! Lol) as for missing a connecting flight...Im sorry to hear that crappy experience, nobody wants to go through that. Be really bold with them next time Zansgirl!
