How long a layover should I allow for at our POE before the connecting flight? Our POE will probably be NY. With the flights I'm looking at there is a 1 hr. 50 min. layover in NY before the next connecting flight. Otherwise, I'd have to choose a 12 hr. layover in NY which is a bit much sense we'll still need to make 1 more pit-stop & connecting flight before arriving home. Would an hour and 50 min. be enough time for my husband to make it through customs & immigration? /thanks

My experience with JFK makes me think that 90 minutes is about a minimum (depending on the time of day) - 110 should be OK but there needs to be a sense of urgency in the traveler's pace.

12-hour layover? Which direction are you going? (Outward international? or Incoming from overseas?) I can't imagine a 12-hour layover for a domestic connecting flight.

Depends on the time of day. Last trip I made that went through JFK I arrived from Brasil there at around 6 am and I was through customs in under 15 minutes going through the residents line, but either way the tourist line was short as well.

Leave 2-3 hours just to be safe.

I've usually gone through in 1/2 hour or less. Those guys are busy but fast.

I really don't want to have to wait in NY for 12 hrs. If we were to miss our connecting flight due to immigration/customs taking too long, would the airlines make us purchase new tickets or just put us on the next flight?

Airline might put you on next flight if there would be any and seats are available with extra charge. My sister missed her connection at JFK with 2 kids and there were no next flight till next day. She were asked to take all her baggage along with her and come back next morning. Luckily she got flight to near by city airport and managed to got home without stay night at NY.

2 things:

I'm from NY and always get through fast, meaning in about an hour.

My wife had to go through customs but not immigration (POE in Alaska) at New York.

She was out of there in about 1:15 arriving at 9 PM on a Thursday night.

1) Arriving at 5 PM on a weekday for a POE I would say 3 hours for a non-USC doing a POE.

2) Examine the I-94 BEFORE leaving the immigration official's area AFTER he/she fills it out.

Don't assume that because the arrival record declaration was filled out correctly on the plane

that the I-94 won't have errors, because it's done by the immigration official, not you.

-It will save you a trip to the major airport nearest your home to get it amended if they

screw up the spelling of the visa holder's name. Also check the number on the BACK

(A-number) for legibility.

Thanks, Thong. Other than handing over the sealed envelope and the I-94 form is there any other paperwork we'll need to fill out and hand over to the immigration officer?

I think I will book a flight with a long layover in NY and just get a hotel room for the night. I'm wondering how safe the area around JFK is sense I'll probably want to book a nearby hotel? I'm assuming there is plenty of public transport from the airport to hotels and major attractions so we don't spend a fortune on taxis? I want to make sure he sees the statue of liberty, maybe Central Park and some of the city.
