Thank you Christina!

Here's the update: the insulin is not really helping. Numbers are still kinda where they were at the beginning of last week. They did another sono for size, and he's over 8 lbs! They said there's a 2 lb margin of error though, so I'm like 'erm, he could be over 10 lbs? #######???' Turns out, sono tech says no, he could be as small as 6.

Anyhoo, now instead of me seeing the doc at 9 am on Wed, he moved it to 3 pm tomorrow. Who wants to bet that I'm getting induced on Wednesday?

Lisa, at my last Neonatalogist appointment, Enzo measured 8lbs - I said "you're gonna hurt mommy"...when he was born 5 days later he weighed 6lbs 15 ozs.

I went in for my 39 week appointment and my blood pressure was a little elevated, but I honestly think that the bigger driver behind my induction was his size on the U/S at 10 lbs. He had been measuring big for the last 3 months of my pregnancy (I had bi-weekly u/s). He was born at 8 lbs. 2 oz., almost 2 lbs under the estimate.

Once I was fully dilated I pushed for 3 hours, mostly because he was still so high up I think.

I know you have GD issues that are factoring in, but I know that in my situation, I probably shouldn't have been induced. I would have preferred to wait for my body to be more ready.

Thank you Staashi....as I've reconciled myself last night...he's going to be what he will be, and the speculation that he's big now is going to push the envelope regardless. So I'm ok with it.

I do think that with all these mitigating factors...my age, the baby's weight, and this GD that the insulin is not really helping anyway...I really believe that I'm going in tonight to the hosp, and it's going to wind up being a c-section. This is just my gut, and I can be wrong, but I really feel in my heart that I'm not. It's all good though, and I am very excited!!!

So I have to run around today like a chicken without a head, getting everything done, lol.

Ultrasound is manically wrong when it comes to sizing... A good doctor or midwife can guesstimate the baby's size by palpating way more accurately, so I personally wouldn't trust it at all for sizing. And big babies doesn't mean they won't fit - my niece weighed 9.5 lbs and fit without even a tear! Fat squishes, what's important is the head size... Jona weighed so little, but his head was sized like a 39 weeker - it can vary greatly. MIL is a size 6 and all her babies weighed at least 9 pounds, yet she had no troubles giving birth. One cannot tell if a baby is too big by u/s, and a true shoulder dystocia or CPD wouldn't present until pushing time.

@ Lisa: I don't know your numbers, but google it and look for women in a similar situation (e.g. there is a huge GD thread right here: http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=1203942) . Very often obgyns want to induce when it is not necessarily urgent, and it should only be done in urgent cases... do you know your Bishop score? Did the doctor tell you how he wants to induce? I would just be very cautious, just recently DH's cousin was induced at 40 weeks sharp for her high blood pressue (high my behind, 130/90 is not high and certainly not pre-E, no protein, no swelling!) which of course ended in a c-section, that was not necessary - she was fine, baby was fine, she wasn't even 15 days overdue yet, she wasn't dilated nor effaced, and only on Pit (which is useless in her case) for less than 5 hours before the doc said failure to progress (it took me like HOURS to progress even 1cm). It's just... Too often I hear those pushy inductions, and mom ends up with a section and hard recovery, baby is really little and even needs some NICU time.

My numbers aren't that bad actually, but I'm not really responding well to the insulin. And the baby was estimated at 8lbs 10 oz yesterday. Of course there's a margin of error for him to be lower, but he literally is taking up my whole belly and I think that with the age, GD, baby's size, my severe anemia, and the fact that I had brain surgery 12 years ago, that they just would rather err on the side of caution.

But again, I'm going to know more at 3. It's really funny, right now I'm in my office tying up loose ends. I had a new customer call me and ask to see a property, and I'm like 'I can't do it tomorrow because I'll be having a baby, but let me get a colleague of mine to show it to you' and she was like 'omG! don't worry about me!' and I'm all 'no worries at all, I'd show it to you next week if you want to wait' LOL

Girl, you do what is best for you and the little guy. If you have to have a c-section - decide quick. Let me say this - there is no shame in having a c-section and anyone who tries to give you a guilt trip is f'd up. Lisa, you have this baby on your terms. I actually would say one thing...if you have had brain surgery, I wouldn't even risk being induced as I would be too concerned that the pressure that could come from labor and pushing might cause something to go wrong cerebrally. Just sayin'. Also, yes, your little guy might have to spend some time in the NICU - who cares. He'll be taken care of like a prince. Your physical ailments, as simple as they may seem on paper, can pan out to be far too much to bear in labor and delivery. I had some strikes against me healthwise and after being in L&D for so long, I wished that I would have just had a c-section originally. I healed so quick and still have my vajayjay intact (go me!) ;) that I am all good with how Enzo finally came into this world. The only thing that was disheartening for me is that after being awake for basically 60 hours in L&D before I had Enzo, I was so exhausted that I was pretty much unconscious for 28 hours. I didn't get to see Enzo in the NICU until the next day, when I could finally shower and leave my room in a wheel chair.

Just remember - your baby, your terms.

@ Lisa: All the best for you! I didn't mean to say it is bad to have a c-section or induction, I just think it is important to ask questions. If I hadn't asked questions, I would have been a c-section for no good reason with Jona (doc felt I was so small, what a reason!). DH's cousin just got her medical records and is incredibly pissed about what transpired and was even diagnosed with PPD now, she feels horribly mistreated and is so mad that she was lied to (doc said there were decels, but there were none) and had to go through major surgery when there was no indication for it. I'm sure your doc however would have told you that labor is out of question if there were concerns with your brain/cranial pressure already. I hope everything goes well for you two. :)

Today we had JOna's 2 year evaluation, which is a free service by our state. I was a little concerned about his speech, however he tested great in all fields, even ahead in understanding and motor skills. The speech therapist has seen lots of bilingual kids and it's normal not to talk a lot, especially since his understanding is so advanced he falls into the group of the kids who prefer to listen for a long time and then dash out in two languages in sentences. All other things were so great, there were three therapists (motor, speech and overall) to evaluate all kinds of things. It was great to get reassurance and talk about his eating habits (he still hates most foods)... I feel so much better and know that we are doing all we can to support his development. I only regret that I didn't start baby signs with him, as he is an avid signer and made up his own signs... Maybe with the next baby!

In two days we'll fly and I'm packing and getting antsy. I'm worried about the flights, he's never happy on planes! I sure hope the whole CARES device thing makes it easier and that the airline won't be late or loose baggage (would be bad, car seat will be checked)... DH is already super sad that we'll be gone for 4 weeks! I still have my stupid sinus infection, the headache is pretty severe, and I know it gets worse on the plane (had it often enough, and the slightly lower cabin pressure makes my head feel like exploding)... Arrgh. And I hope no crazy kid-haters will be sitting right next to us!!!! Once we return we might have an ultrasound, provided the insurance approves it.... And soon enough we'll fly to the Bay Area for Halloween. Busy schedule all the way until November, and then baby will arrive soon. I can't believe how quickly time went by this time...

I told Declan's daycare that we are switching him because of my new job. It was so sad actually, a couple of the teachers got teary eyed. I really like his current daycare and never would have switched otherwise. Hoping the new daycare is just as good.

@Lisa I hope all goes well for you. When I was pregnant, I was carrying twins and that automatically put me in a high risk category (along with a previous procedure that could have compromised my cervix). You have to learn to advocate for yourself. It was hard for me to do at first. But, I learned what my body and my children were doing. Zak caused them to push the panic button a couple times during the end of the pregnancy when they thought he wasn't active enough during the biophysical profiles. I had to tell them to just wait it out because I knew he liked to sleep when he liked to sleep and when he was ready to be active he would be. The techs just wouldn't believe it. One nurse when I was in the hospital thought she saw a decel and ended up putting me on constant monitoring and no food/liquid for 24 hours. The next nurse who came in told me that previous nurse was crazy. She knew from her monitoring of my kiddos that sometimes it was just a crappy signal because I was carrying twins and it was hard to get them both monitored. I did end up with a c-section -- but only because of the presentation of BOTH of my twins. They were born at 2 days shy of 37 weeks and were HEALTHY. I wish you only great delivery wishes!

AFU - we are preparing for my husband's trip to Italy on Thursday. He's going for one week. Thank goodness it happens when I have a long weekend. I have to take the twins to daycare on Thursday and Friday. They aren't used to early mornings (like getting up at 6 am -- they don't wake up until 8 am usually). So, it could be interesting. My mom is coming to spend Tuesday and Wednesday with them and I have Thursday off for the Jewish New Year.

Yay no hospital yet! Getting induced on labor day!

The rushing of moving the appts was due to the doc's g'ma being ill and prolly going to pass shortly. So he's running to TX for 3 days.

So fricken excited that my little man can mature a little more...I'll be 38 weeks 4 days on Monday.

Thanks everyone! I will write more when I'm less exhausted.

Best of luck Lisa! Hoping for a healthy mommy and healthy baby! (F)

I'm one of the few that will tell you...the U/S size can be accurate sometimes. When we went to ours late pregnancy, the tech looked scared and said "he's measuring 9lbs"...I brushed it off because midwives and Bradley teachers repeat like a mantra "your body will not make a baby it can't birth" and my midwife estimated 8 lbs.

Well, Sebas was 9.6 lbs, and I'm a size 0 :help:

And we ended up having a csection because he got stuck because of his size. I had to be transferred to the hospital fully dilated and after (8 hours I think?) of pushing (36 hours of active labor, and 24 hours after my water broke)

So...sometimes U/S and doctors ARE right, and midwives are wrong

If you have a csection, my one recommendation is: have someone film the birth. Even if you think it's gross now, after all is said and done...you're going to want to see it. The only regret that I have from having a csection is that I missed those first moments - you know, first cry, what was his expression catching the first glimpse of the world, etc. Other than that, the scar is minimal: It's very small, and very low - they follow the line where your hair starts down there- I can wear a bikini and it'll never show. I felt no pain, even when I only took half of the pain meds that they offered me...and most important, Sebas was perfectly healthy!.

Can't wait to hear an update about your little one

Hugs,

Caro
