Caro: yeah Ben has the sleep sheep too and the twilight turtle. I love the turtle. He sleeps in our room, so we get to use it too, haha! He only likes the rain drops setting on the sheep but it's enough noise for him to sleep through the phone ringing or us talking. What is cafe con leche? Like a latte? Man I wish my parents had raised me on that stuff too! :P

Vi: maybe it's time to wean or at least night wean Sofia... I'm not bf anymore, but when I did it was even worse with the sleeping. I started weaning him at night - I told him no, offered him a pacifier or a sip of water and it worked!! After he was weaned it still took a few months for him to sleep through the night, but it got a little better.. He is still asking to "go nursey" every now and then, and I just distract him. I was just never comfortable breastfeeding a toddler, it's more of a comfort thing at this point and if you can find an alternative you may be able to get more sleep. For Ben the weaning didn't work right away, but it made it easier to get him back to sleep at night when he woke up. But I heard that other parents had immediate results after they weaned, or the child weaned herself.

How is everybody doing. I'm keeping myself busy at work, which will change in another month when summer is over and things will calm down. Ben is doing greathe speaks a few words, he understand a lot of things I say, like lets go showe, lets go change diaper, etc. His first word after mama, dada and papa was baba, which means ball, something he says bola (portuguese).

good, that means baby boy will stay outta my egg nog during the winter.

especially because it's spiced.

@ Vi: we nightweaned Jona at 14 months. Very gently. First you make sure she had dinner and nurses right before bed time. Then you cut one night nursing, and pat her back, cuddle her instead of nursing. Step by step she will sleep longer and nightwean. I don't mind nursing a toddler at all. Dh minds it somewhat, but my supply is tanking due to pregnancy :(

Kelly: I feel flutters but wrote it off as gas... it feels different than with Jona, not direct but dampened. Like the placenta is attached at a different place. We will see! I'm still nauseous here and there at 12 weeks! I have my first appointment at the new place on August 12th. I'm looking forward to it a lot!

Hi, ladies

I hope everyone is well. I thought I'd say hello since I haven't posted in a while. Not much new to report except that my belly is getting rather large, the kid is pretty active, and I'm in denial that I still have 13 long weeks to go.

I've been receiving some pressure (mostly from Jon's mother's friends in the UK) to start a baby gift registry, and I'm completely at a loss. I have no idea what I'm doing and what might be necessary vs. optional or possibly useless. Any suggestions about stuff you didn't think you'd need but found very useful, and vice versa?

I already have a ton of clothes given to me by my friend who had a baby girl in October--this is the same friend whose husband said that my "body image would completely change" (cheeky bastid!). I still haven't bought much of anything mostly because I don't want to jump the gun, but now that I'm at about 27.5 weeks, I suppose it makes sense to at least think about what we might need. While we were in England a few weeks ago, Jon's aunt gave us some stuff. I think the prezzies, hand-me-downs, and well-wishing are coming whether I'm ready or not!

In other news, I'm finally having cravings! I really haven't had any so far because the nausea's been so stubborn (much better than it was, but still there even now), and the pregnancy has been characterized more by aversions and poor appetite than cravings. But suddenly, I'm craving stuff like donuts, which I eat about twice a year. Yay! I never thought I'd embrace something like this.

I hope everyone's doing well.

any of you have any baby / parenting books they can recommend? I'm looking for one that gives solutions or explanations of common problems with babies/ young children (e.g. gives ideas on how to soothe your crying baby etc.). Ideally with common symptoms of common childhood illnesses (may-be some treatable with home remedies?), but also talks about what to look forward to in your young child regarding development etc.

Any books you've found to be comprehensive and useful?

@ Tweety: I swear by Dr. Sears. He has the baby book and then other books, e.g. for fussy babies, toddlers, gentle discipline, breastfeeding and so on. I bought the baby book and the others are available at my library, so I only checked them out on as need basis. I don't have any other baby books whatsoever.

@ Empress of Groovy: It totally depends on your needs! One thing that is rather important is a decent car seat (you can buy and infant seat and then a convertible or use the latter from the get go; good infant seats are Graco Snugride or Maxi Cosi, good convertibles Britax or Sunshine Kids). A changing table wouldn't be bad either, and then it is totally dependent on your choices... Cloth diapers vs. disposables, stroller or baby carrier (or both!), later on a highchair, a couple good toys (here the fun begins, google non-toxic BPA free and such... we don't have many, but high quality ones). Do you want a cosleeper or a crib - the cosleeper though is usually outgrown by 6 months though, but really nice! I'd say a boppy is great whether you nurse or formula feed... If you are able to breastfeed you save a whole lot of money on supplies and formula, no idea how much that all is. A breastpump might be necessary if you work, some health insurances pay that actually. Most baby things are rather fancy accessories than necessities, but we parents get tricked quickly into buying useless stuff for our precious little ones! ;)

Ditto Dr Sear's "The Baby Book"! I looove it!

I've read what two expect the first year, tons of magazines...and it is by far the most useful, comprehensive, and trustworthy :)

Had my appt today. Babys heartbeat was 150 via doppler. I go back in an hour for my NT scan. I wasnt going to have it done but I havent seen the little bean since 6w1d so I will do anything at this point for a free peek. Hubby and I both do not have any history of genetic disorders in our family so I really dont think I have anything to worry about.

Hope everyone is well.

Cool, how was the NT scan? I very much enjoyed mine and was glad I let my OB talk me into that rather than going straight for the CVS or amnio (fortunately, the results of the scan & blood work were good, so I didn't have one of the more invasive tests). I had the NT scan at exactly 12 weeks, when I was feeling very rough, and it was so cool to see the little humanoid that was causing all the havoc and be reassured that things were looking OK.

Anna, thanks for the info. My main question now is whether to bother getting some kind of bassinet or moses basket type thing, or just to get a crib and keep it in our room initially. I do plan on breastfeeding, so I know that will require a whole other set of supplies questions. And don't get me staaated on diapers! A friend of mine started using GroVia diapers about a month ago and says they're great. Of course, I'm completely clueless.

I didnt, and wasnt planning on having one with this baby either. However, my dating ultrasound was at 6w1d and all we had a picture of was a sac and a fetal pole so I really wanted to have another ultrasound before 20 weeks. Im glad I did it. My anxiety is gone and I feel a million times better
