Congrats @Sleeping through the night Ben. I'm happy for you Stef. You deserve a break.

@Autumn: Hope Declan gets to feel better soon. Poor baby.

@Vi: Allie is almost two and still wakes up at night. I don't mind but I think Anna had some good tips on gentle nightweaning.

Yay Stef for Ben finally sleeping through the night. You deserve many many hours of uninterrupted sleep after the past 2 sleepless years :)

So, I thought Declan was feeling a bit better last night. He wanted to eat something, so I gave him a slice of dry toast. Well, apparently he puked that up all over our bed (hubby and I are taking turns sleeping in the guest bedroom while the other stays in our bed with Declan). Last night at 2 am, after lots of whimpering and kicked and tossing and turning, Declan FINALLY fell asleep, so I woke hubby up and traded off so I could get a few hours rest. After that was when he puked. I am SOOOO sick of this. I just wish he would get better.

Man...poor baby Declan. How long has this been going on? Shouldn't it stop after a day or two if it's only a stomach bug? This almost seems like it's something more serious than that (like RSV or Noro or whatever). Hope he's better soon. Hugs to you mama.

wow dito what Evi said. Sounds like he is very uncomfortable... Does the pain only occur at night? Could be intususseption (sp?) where a distal colon segment "folds" over a proximal segment which can cause a lot of pain at night time. It also is sometimes associated with a stomach bug or fever. Take him back to the doc or ER if he doesn't get better. poor little guy.

Or another thought- does Declan put small objects in his mouth, like toys, coins etc? I've seen a couple kids who swallowed coins and magnets and they had similar symptoms and a lot of pain. I really hope he gets better soon and you guys will get some rest too! Hugs!

Vi: I putt him on a strict nap and bedtime schedule, same time, same place, same eating routines and he sleeps with us (sigh) but it's a compromise I'm willing to make for 8 hours of uninterupted sleep (not that I will ever catch up, haha)

oops I totally forgot to mention that I had my first ultrasound today! yay! We saw the little baby and the heartbeat, so cute! Apparently we must have conceived 4 days before my period was due because it measures at 7w+4days instead of 10 weeks (by the regular cycle), so my due date was moved from Feb 22 to March 4. :) It's so weird how that works but that would also explain the very faint line 4 days after the missed period.

I have another ultrasound for the genetic testing around 12 weeks and another at 20 weeks where they check for trisomies (sadly it runs in both families)but I love to get a peek at the baby, so I am looking forward to that. And I really love the doctor and the midwife there. I'm so excited!

A last note before I bow out here. My wife does not like what happens with the cultural conditioning - all the negativity that invariably crops up with early infant learning. Don't take it as "our baby is better than yours". It is "look at what you can do for your child" - like learning to read as an infant instead of at six or seven years old.

Just a few minutes showing friends of ours or people who have stopped us to ask how to do it has made them very, very grateful.

I don't think I explained the motivation behind earlier walking. So for the interested, the science literature speaks of an amazing phenomenon called The Dawn of Active Thought. It is a period of explosive cognitive growth associated with locomotion. When babies learn to self-locomote, (it can be with assistance like holding their hands for balance), then they learn spatial geography, they start categorizing objects, their names, associations, etc. They don't learn this from being carried around, just like you don't remember how to drive someplace being a passenger not paying attention to what is going on. But driving it yourself you remember.

Most of all, you engage their natural curiosity and once that gets going there is no stopping them. They start using logic and what the papers call "decisionmaking under risk".

That is what happened with our boy. The most distinctive impression people get is how advanced he is mentally. Insofar as the comment about not making a difference later in life:. Here is the record of the pilot baby that had the program most closely associated with ours (we have an innovation nobody has tried yet): Walking independently 7.5 months. Three word sentences 11 months. Playing hockey 14 months. Riding bike at 3. Reading and writing at 4 years old. He's an MD/PhD at Harvard University now. They have done ten-year follow-up studies on the entire group from one of the experiments, and it is a life-long advantage although clearly this advantage depends on whether the parents continue to work on it or whether they do nothing with their child after infancy.

Dr. Phil Zelazo at McGill Institute and Dr. Karen Adolph at New York University are the two that we learned the most from in our program. We have about 20 papers on walking, swimming, obstacle-type experiments, etc. Dr. Adolph did a lot on cross-cultural comparisons proving that in societies where crawling and walking are taught (duh) they crawl and walk far earlier. The early reading has broken into the mainstream now with "my baby can read". If it goes on television, then Joe six pack believes it. If it is merely in a science journal, Joe six pack thinks its stupid.

Obviously, I can't quote science papers based on experiments with hundreds of babies over decades to someone preferring their babysitting experience. But for those interested, maybe the quickest and easiest-to-read paper is Karen Adolph's paper Locomotor Development. Google that. Phil has numerous papers on teaching walking but the first was "Walking in the Newborn" published in science magazine in 1972.

Yes, we know about the "stepping reflex". The entire point is turning the stepping reflex into walking. What we are saying is that every baby can do it. Nothing special about ours at all. An average kid. He's just blowing his cohorts out of the water mentally and physically because we are teaching him.

We understand the negativity. Not a problem. Cultural conditioning. Fear and loathing. Space aliens.

Cheers.

Dr Sears actually encourages the opposite. He recommends "baby wearing", carrying your baby for several hours each day on a sling. He says that with the comfort of being close to mom or dad, and the upright position which helps with reflux, babies cry less - and the extra time they gain they use it to learn. Watching what mom or dad does upclose, specially if you take the time to explain it to the baby, stimulates baby's learning.

There are as many ways to raise a baby as there are people and mom-dad-baby combinations. Keep doing what works for you, be flexible and attentive to your baby's cues on what is working and what is not.

Caro, it is funny that you posted as I haven't had a chance to tell you that Enzo is in Argentina with his grandparents. He loves it!!! He loves to eat facturas (medialunas), tostadas, and especially criollos!!! Also, my MIL said that he enjoys cafe con leche and mate. At first, I thought, you're kidding - my son is drinking cafe con leche? But then I calmed down thinking that if it was good enough for hubby (who is healthy as all get out), it's good enough for Enzo. He also loves to play soccer and is kicking a ball around all the time. I can't believe it - my little Argentino.:luv:

Thanks for the well wishes. Declan is STILL sick. It has been since Sunday morning. The whimpers are not only at night, Stef ... more often then, but during the day too. He still has a fever, but only 100 or 101, has diarrhea, but today he started with a runny nose and cough. His eyes are also now bloodshot, runny and swollen a bit. The eyes were a problem yesterday when we saw the doc. He says it is due to the virus. We will definitely take him back tomorrow if he is not better.

Stef - yay for hearing the heartbeat!

Staashi - Sounds like Enzo is having quite a time!

Raw eggs are basically unsuitable (on-the-whole, especially nutritionally--taking them inhibits absorption of biotin, not true of cooked eggs) for any human consumption :P
good, that means baby boy will stay outta my egg nog during the winter.
 Are you saying that you aren't human then? (or I guess with lots of alcohol, you don't know if it's suitable or not).
