I think the biggest thing, the hardest 'work' with having a new baby is that your time is no longer your own. I was a bit of a workaholic too at times, but when its work and you 'hit the wall', or have something else to do, you can always decide to go in early and finish in the morning, or take it home and do it later, or whatever. Once baby arrives, at least for the first few months, you are totally on baby time. It doesnt matter if you are drop dead exhausted, or starving, or havent showered for 3 days - when baby needs something you do it. Or you are ready to head out the door to an appointment or even a lunch with friends and suddenly there is a diaper explosion that requires not only a change of clothes but a bath and then its time for a feeding and suddenly you are an hour late. This was the adjustment that was hardest for me. FORTUNATELY, you are so head over heels in love with your baby that you do all of this gladly, or at least most of the time although I think if everyone is honest most will admit to a moment or two of wondering if you were really up to the whole mothering thing :P

about the genetic stuff - I was 38 when I had Amirah and my midwife sent me to the local children's hospital (local, well... 60 miles away but still) for a highly detailed U/S. There are some measurements that can be made at the 18-20 week age that are very good indicators for Down's. Mine came out fine but if there had been a question then they would have recommended an amnio and I am not sure if I would have gone for it or not.

My kids are more work now as toddlers as they were as babies. THey'd just sleep for hours at a time, eat, poop and go to sleep again. Also, the 'parenting and couple struggles' started when disciplining the kids had to be done. I'm trying the gentler approach, try to explain things and let them explore while my husband is more of a "You either do that or you're getting a butt whippin" kinda guy. Mostly he's just talking the talk and never executing his threads but we did a lot of headbudding because of it and if your relationship is not strong enough I believe that it can tear you apart as a couple.

Good luck in your pregnancy. Enjoy it.

@ Happy Bunny: Lawd, I know what you're going through with all these blood tests! I'm 35, a year younger than you, with hypothyroids so on top of all the prenatal blood tests, I have to go in for monthly thyroids blood test and just over the weekend, I got my vaccinations updated in preparation for the immigration medical exam. Did I mention I have a fear of needles? **feeling faint just thinking about it**

@ JVKnCVO: Ha, my husband said the other day he would change diapers indefinitely if babies could stay babies for a long time. :)

@ tnh: You have twins?! So lucky--I would love to have twins, get hubby a vasectomy and be done with baby-making, lol.

Anyhoo, my midwife just got back to me regarding the ultrasound report and the tech did not comment on the gender! >:-( So frustrating.

On the other hand, the anatomy of the baby looks fine (whew!) but the baby is growing asymetrically (uh oh!), meaning one ratio measurement says 17wk5d, another 18wk4d, and the third at 19wk3d.... Me thinks the baby is trying to confuse us! Anyhoo, the midwife wants to keep an eye on the development and is scheduling another ultrasound in two weeks with a different service provider, one with more powerful u/s technology. At that time, I'll likely get to know the baby's gender (Woot woot!) because I'll be past the 20 weeks mark.

@ Happy Bunny - I am an only child too and Declan is my first. I really had no clue when it came to baby stuff until I had him, as babies terrified me before I got pregnant (I loved kids and saw many kids as my clients, but under the age of 2 freaked me out back then). I was a bit of a workaholic too and I stupidly had the idea that my maternity leave would be a 3 month holiday where I could get a lot of projects done around my house that I never seemed to be able to do because I was working before. I was so naive!!! The sleep deprivation and the baby blues made the first couple months really hard. In retrospect though, it was so much easier when Declan was a baby compared to now with a daredevil toddler

@ Susita - You're so close!!!

@ Caro - Sebas is adorable ... love the pics.

So, my husband had a huge project due today for his Anatomy and Physiology class and apparently rushed out of the house in a hurry. I know this because tonight, while I was making dinner, Declan found a bunch of things my husband left on the kitchen table underneath his papers ... including wood dowels that are now used as drumsticks, his protractor (grabbed right away by me) and a package of nails. Aaaahhhh .... so wanted to kill the man :) Of course, I discovered Declan found all of this stuff as I was making custard which was supposed to be stirred constantly, not stir ... grab something from a toddler ... stir stir ... scream and jump across the room because the toddler is playing with nails :)

Sof is discovering everything around her, opneing cabinest, climbing, hiding, eating I'm exhausted by her second nap so you can imagine how do I feel when is close to her bed time. Today we gave her regular milk for the first time and of course and as I predicted she didn't like it and to be honest I'm not ready to give up breastfeeding,I love thta whe she sees me with the boopy pillos around me waiting for her she crawls super fast and positions herself, she even pushes down my t-shirt or whatever I'm wearing so she can get the #######,too cute.

Hubby keeps talking about having another one but no way I'm not ready and to be honest I'm happy with her right now

I think, so far, the most challenging weeks were the first 6 weeks. They are very inefficient feeders so breastfeeding takes forever, and they eat every 2-3 hours so a lot of your time is spent with a little baby attached to you. Then in between feedings they need a diaper change, comfort, they get gassy, they fall asleep on top of you and you don't want to move because that would wake him up...time for a new feeding, repeat cycle. Besides, the only way to communicate that they have is crying, which even if you attend to the baby right away, you still get small constant doses of crying which is very stressful...and since they don't smile or play, you are working for a boss that only complains. add sleep deprivation because they need to eat every 2-3 hours... :help:

But, even if it is very very challenging, I never felt love like this before, I could really make any sacrifice for him and not think twice about it  (apologies to the hubby, which I love with all my heart! but this love is completely different)

Saludos,

Caro

Caro, your right. I have 3 young girls who work for me who are expecting their firsts and we talk alot about the "love" you feel for your child. it really is amazing.

Karen, thats too funny., Zaid is VERY into tools right now. He always asks his dad for the "Wench and Screwbiber" lol He pretends to "fix" things and always takes the tape measure and measures the walls.

Vi, welcome to toddlerhood. It is fun, but very challenging. I hate to tell you, but Sofias curiousity is only gonna get worse over the next year to year and a half. Zaid is more than I can handle lately. Good luck :)

Hey ladies :)

I called my doc this morning because last night I woke up and I was a little wet. I think I may have leaked some amniotic fluid, not 100%. I'm having a lot of back pain too and what feels like gas pain, but I have no gas

I'm waiting for him to call me back now. Maybe something is happening  I didn't go into labor with the twins, they scheduled a c-section and I made it to that date, so I have no idea if this is normal or not.

O well, wish me luck! If nothing's happening, I'll be back in a little bit with an ice coffee and a bagel.
