Vi, I mentioned it on facebook but it is completely normal. Zaid is very jealous of any affection Sofyan and I show one another. 2yrs-3yrs is a pretty difficult (but really fun) age. Hang in there. Alot of things Sofia will do in the next coming months will throw you for a loop but her behavior sounds pretty typical to her age.

oh and FWIW, 2 kids is ALOT easier then I thought it would be. I believe I spaced my kids perfectly to where Zaid is almost 3 when she was born. He is a helper and he understands that she has needs too.

Vi: sounds normal for her age but I wouldnt know what to do either, definitely do not put up with biting. As for 2 kids, holy cow I'm not sure how I Aam going to figure this out in the next 5 weeks before I go back to work! With hubbys help and then a few days with the in-laws it's been chaotic to say the least but everyone is getting fed and the house looks ok but I have no clue how to keep up once hubby has to go back to work! Ben has gotten lots of presents and attention from everyone the last 6 days but I don't know where to take the time and energy from when I am on my own with them.

Kai is so different than Ben, so far he is screaming his head off every night for about 4 hours. Ben was a lot more easy going in the beginning, but with this one, I can't even set him down for one minute and he starts to cry. He is also constantly spitting up, Ben never did that they are just so different! I guess it will take a while to figure out his MO. :)

@ Vi: toddlers... Normal. One good day, one bad day... Jona e.g. does great with Eloise but decided to be a stinker here and there and ignore my NO. Sooo much fun!

@ Steffi: Eloise won't tolerate being put down either... Oh my. At night she's ok and gives me 3-4 hour stretches, nurses, falls asleep and can be put in the cosleeper after 10 minutes... But throughout the day... Don't put me down, not in the swing, bouncer nope only mama's arms or the baby carrier is ok... Which would be ok if I wasn't sick and currently husbandless. Yikes.

Btw I think if Ben is ok with Kai now he will be later on too... At least Jona is still totally ok with his sister, he just gives us a hard time here and there, but that started in December already.

Ugh I have some sort of cold, I feel horrible, like I was hit by a truck. Jona has it since Tuesday. Fun. I hope the little one won't catch it.

Congrats Stef he is a cutie.

I never really found it harder having the kids close in age, coming home with a new baby just a bit more different. The older one(s) where great little helpers and always got along great. Now as teens we see a little more friction.

I have a question? Went on our hospital tour (ya I know a bit early but we have 2 hospitals to check out) and now I'm a little freaked out. So just how much of a problem would I have if I absolutely refused the hep lock? I have had 4 unmediated and plan too again, I'm not trying to be supper women I just really hate needles and prefer they stay far away from me. Pain I can deal with needles I can't. I never had to have a hep lock before and I will not have one this time either. I know all the why I should and such, I have had surgery before so I know what IVs are like going in etc, the thing is I don't believe it is needed for this. So how much of a problem will I have, now don't get me wrong if the doctor finds something before I go into labour and interventions are needed that is something different. If all is well I want to avoid it.

Second thing is the nurse mentioned that since I am going natural if I get an episiotomy(sp) they don't freeze the area first, cause that is a big needle and they don't do that for natural births they only do that if the epi's don't work. So they will cut while not numb???? That just doesn't sound right, how can they get away with sticking you with a freaking hep lock and then say freezing is not natural so we cut you without it.

Sorry got a bit longer then I thought

So I am a manager of a bank, but, my bank is inside of a grocery store. My branch is very small and theres only one office (my office) that has a door on it, and the door is glass and exposed to all of the stores customers :( I assumed since we lease through the grocery store that the store managers would allow me to pump in one of their offices but I was wrong. I called this morning and was told I couldnt tie up their "space" several times a day because their offices are always being used and I would need to find a way to pump in the bank (impossible) Im sitting here crying. I didnt think it would be this hard.I called the grocery stores human relations rep and my HR rep as well and am waiting for calls back. I dont know how the laws apply to me since we lease through the store. Worst possible scenario is I will park my car in the back of the parking lot and pump there but it wont be easy doing that because I will have to bring my pump parts back into the store with me everytime to wash them. Ive only known one other bank manager who pumped and she didnt feel like dealing with it so she pumped in the bathroom. i cant imagine doing that.

@ Ontarkie: Rubbish! Whatever that nurse said is completely crazy. I had my son without epidural and the midwife did give me a lidocaine shot before she repaired my two tears. She gave it to me when he was crowning in anticipation I might tear, because when baby is about to crown, all the pressure takes nearly all the sensation away from the perineum, I did not even feel the lidocaine. My mom had all of us naturally and got lidocaine shots for her episiotomies (they gave them to everyone back in the 70/80ies)... A provider that refuses to give you a lidocaine shot for repairs should have their license revoked, that is evil to deny well-deserved pain relief. My birthing center where I gave birth has no pain relief stuff (no epis or such) but they do have lidocaine for stitches. Ridic what that person said. And as for episiotomies... Hope you won't need one. I didn't allow one unless baby is in distress, and my midwife has practiced for 10 years and only ever performed one epi in that time. It's really a rarely needed procedure. Even the obgyn (the backup) said he uses them ueber-rarely and not even for vacuum extractions! I had two tears with Jona but bounced back quickly compared to my sisters who had epis and couldnt sit on their behinds for a month... Just anecdotal... And since I delivered Eloise the way I wanted, on all fours without any pressure on the perineum, I walked home tear-free. :D I am sure if I had been on my back I would have torn.

As for the saline/heplock, you are completely within your rights to refuse it. They will pull the "it is hospital policy" ####### on you, but in reality they cannot force you to have one, it is a patient's right to refuse any procedure. I had a saline lock with Jona, I didn't care too mcuh about that and more about limited fetal monitoring, and this time I had no IV, no saline lock, no fetal monitoring machine with those nasty belts (instead intermittent monitoring with a handheld doppler) and thus complete freedom of movement (I cannot imagine laboring naturally when confined to a bed, I need to move around and get comfy in a position that feels right). I refused a whole lot "hospital procedure" stuff with Jona, the nurse I got was totally fine with it and respected it. Ask for a nurse who supports natural birth, that will help tons...

@ Kelly: Oh that stinks. Can you put up blinds in that office? I hope HR will get back to you, bathrooms are not exactly sanitary. I don't know the laws in your state... Google it. Back in CA and NY they had pretty good laws....

That is horrible. Can you put up curtains or something to make it more private. Oh or maybe you can make a little dividing wall with one of those folding divider thingys in a corner of your office. Hopefully you hear something from your HR soon.

Vi,

I put Sebastian on his play pen for time outs. I know I'm missing out in using it as a "safe place", but it's the only way to give him time outs. I make sure to give him a warning first "If you hit again, you're getting a time out", and explain after "You got time out because you hit, and we don't hit because it hurts". He is starting to get the idea. The other day he started hitting, and I got down to his eye level, grabbed his hand and looking at him in the eyes I said "If you hit again, you're getting a time out. Do you want time out?" and he gave me his "oops" face and hugged me :)

Kel,

Federal law was passed along with the health care bill that requires employers covered under FLSA to provide accommodations for nursing mothers. Your HR team should be well versed in this issue since it made headlines on the SHRM. Here's some links

Breastfeeding Breaks: What is the definition of “a private place” under the breastfeeding break provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act?

Ontarkie: hm what kind of hospital is that? I guess it also depends on your doctor/midwife because they have to order the iv rahter than the nurses just putting one in because its the policy (I might be wrong here but this is how it's done where I work). Usually if you have a totally natural birth, GIVEN you're GBS neg, the midwifes will not put an iv in. As soon as your GBS pos, need fluids or pain meds, or God forbid a section, you'll get an iv if you want to or not.

Most of the deliveries where I work are done by midwifes so my hospital is a little more easy going on the meds and interventions. I have not seen one epi so far since I work there, they all tear and the repairs are done with prolocaine.

I think it's best to discuss this with your OB, because they will be the ones to call the shots (literally haha), and if you get a feeling that you're not on the same page then switch to a nurse-midwife.

Caro: yes, I can def say that the second baby is 100% easier and typically faster, I just didn't want to believe it until I went through it myself. :) I think it's also because you know what to expect and you're less freaked out by all the leaking and pain etc (that's what it was for me I guess). I think second time moms are more relaxed which helps move the baby down and out.

I agree, at least for me the second baby was way easier, and she was bigger than Jona... I think your body just knows better what's going on and labor generally is faster for multiparas.... I still pushed for two hours, but that is probably unique to me as all my friends who had their second babies didn't push more than 20 minutes. ;) Things really did go fast overall, it took me a while to process... From the first seriously painful contraction to birth only 5 hours elapsed... I think that's pretty fast! (all those contrax before were regular and painful like cramps, but I could talk through them, so I'd consider that prodromal labor).

Eww ladies you gotta read this... My husband just sent me the link, gross! I really don't disinfect much around the house (I only have some disinfectant for the toilet bowl and 7th generation naturally disinfectant wipes for meat cleanup in the kitchen if it spills).... But now I am happy to use those wipes at the store - I started when Jona got the croup as I'm sure he got it from the carts... And thinking that so many toddlers lick shopping carts... YUCK what's on there!
