Joyce: Goodluck with your job interview! Now I am wondering if I will get some study time after the baby comes, I am still finishing my masters in communication disorders and I have two years left of studying and exams...I am sure when the time comes we will have to work things out

Congrats to the new pregnancies and gender-reveals!

Happy New Year's everyone!!! I feel like it has been so long since I've been here. Does anyone still remember me? :P

I tried to read all of the posts that I missed, but 20 pages later, I was still reading, so I gave up and skimmed the rest.

Congrats to AJ :)

Nizzy - I am with you! Maybe we can support each other. I really want another child, and am feeling like summer would finally be time to try, but I want to lose weight and be a bit healthier. I'm worried that going into it, things are already stacked against us a bit, like our age (I just turned 36 and hubby is 47) and Declan's medical issues that he had. I want to try to be as healthy as I can be. The good thing is that I am not nearly as stressed at my new job as I was at the old job (due to the ridiculous office politics). Sometimes I just shake my head in wonder ... I am now hearing the most horrific war stories, tons of trauma, etc. ... yet I am not nearly as mentally drained as I was at my last job, just being in that building. Plus, I must admit, the travel and training perks ROCK!!! I'm heading to Boston next week for training, and hubby and Declan get to come with me.

My mom spent a month with us for Christmas. For me, it was wonderful, as her being here gave me a break. When hubby is in school, he studies constantly and doesn't do anything around the house and can be a bit of a PITA when stressed (I feel for you Anna, with your pregnancy and a hubby in school). So, for me, mom being here gave me time in the evening to relax, as she would help with Declan or cooking. My mom and hubby get along great usually, but we learned that a month is a bit long for hubby to have someone else in his space. We were a bit snappy with each other at the end, so the Boston trip is much needed. Looking forward to family time (heading down this weekend before the training so I can do museums and stuff too).

Stef - my heart goes out to you. What is the latest with Ben? You have had such trouble with doctors in your area. Hope all is well now.

@ Karen: I hope everything will work out! My BIL was super nervous since he is 42 (my sister is 35) for conceiving, he felt he was too old, but everything worked just fine on the first try with no issues... I am not sure how common Declan's issues are, but let's think positive!

I got lucky that DH and I met so early in life and that I already finished grad school before we got married, so we could start a family now before 30. I find it stressful enough currently that DH is going through his MA right now... Taking care of everything while being pregnant with all the ailments there are stinks!

Congratz on the new pregnancies :)

I can't believe how quickly time is passing... And yes Steffi, I am a little scared too of having two kids. I'm worried that I cannot take care properly with the proper amount of attention for both of them, I don't want anyone to suffer from feeling neglected. My biggest fear is that Jona feels left out... I'm so glad MIL will come for the first 2 weeks or so, I dunno even for how long? Gotta ask her!

@ Steffi: Any news on Ben? Daumen gedrueckt...

Karen: good luck with everything. I'm sure being less stressed out at work will help you too with the conceiving issues. We tried for 8 months while I finished up school and it didn't work until I actually graduated.. Now looking back I think I was just too stressed out. So happy for you!

Ben is doing fine, I have a good feeling that things will be normal. It's been 48 hours and we didn't hear anything yet, so I figure if its bad they would probably call us, right? We have an appointment with the surgeon on monday. I feel so much better now that its done. The surgeon was a little short and arrogant but he said its unlikely it is malignant as opposed to the dermatologist and the pediatrician. I hope he is right.

It's so amazing how fast little kids bounce back from having surgery. He was upset when he first saw that part of his head was shaved but we explained it to him and it seems like he totally understands! He actually thinks its cool.

Part of our problem with the doctors here is that we have 2 different insurance carriers for medical stuff and hospital stuff. Most doctors are affiliated with a hospital that doesn't accept our hospital insurance or vice versa. It's really frustrating.

Anna: I think it will all fall in place when the baby is there... so far Ben is very excited about his baby brother. He tells me every day how he wants to share his stuff with him (even his bookaaah= Pacifier) haha. And how he wants to give him a ride on his tractor etc. I really hope we will be able to spend time with just him. I'm so nervous how to figure out to juggle the 2 kids and work and get a minute of sleep in between because I am doing permanent nights starting next week. And I also worry about hubby, how is he going to handle 2 children at night by himself when I work and he has to go to work the next morning when I get home. I am trying to talk him into taking a few weeks off after I go back because his job is so stressful and we have to get both kids on a routine befroe we can both work full time. I'm not sure but are daddies allowed to take FMLA when they have a baby?

Yeah dads can take FMLA. Of course the federal mandate does not require that employers pay during FMLA so most do not (although some do). The reason most new dads I know don't FMLA is because of the paperwork involved in initiating it (disincentive to use FMLA for short periods of time off) plus the fact that they dont get paid during FMLA.

Grrrrr...I just made a long post and my internet connection went out ann POOF it's gone!

Karen: I would love to have a support system. It looks like we are in similar situations. Aside from losing weight, I am also timing the borth arouond hubby's graduation. It mean's a significant pay increase for him so that I can work part-time. He can also help me without the excuse of having to study : ) And the office politics thing, that was totally my last job! About 5 months into it, I found another job and ran as fast as I could. My boss was so distraught, he offered me a raise and I basically told him that no amount of money would be an incentive to work in that environment. The human services industry has a lot of crazies in it...and no, I am not talking about the clients. The job that I have now, while not a long-term one for me, is pretty much free of that childish behavior. There are some issues that have come up here and there but I am so glad I work independently and do not have to run into those 'I have no life so I will cause drama at work to make my life meaningful" type people. I am also still working on my Masters and am praying I get a job at the county. Part-time county pay and benefits are way better then what I make and have now as a full-time employee.

Hi, everyone! This is my first time posting here. My hubby and I have decided to start a family. And we're trying to work out when would be a "good" time. I thought a little objective insight might be helpful as we both have baby on our brains. Lol.

I am 29 years old and in the last leg of my PhD program. I expect to complete my degree around September, no later than December 2011. I have funding to complete my dissertation project and the remaining major steps include my general exam (planning to take it in March) sending samples off to a lab/wait for results, and writing 3 journal articles. I have finished my course work and have a part-time job in my field. My co-workers, supervisor, and dissertation advisor are great and my work schedule is super flexible. I can even work from home. My fellowship, and therefore paychecks, will end in September. My hubby makes enough to take care of our current expenses...with very little left for savings. But we have an emergency fund that covers 8 months of living expenses. I plan to start looking for a position after I complete my general exams (March/April) . We're thinking now might be a good time to conceive, since by the time the baby is due (October/November) either I will have a job in my field ( and can afford to pay for child care) or I'll still be looking for a position but at least I'd be home with our little one while I look.

We're tempted to wait until I have been working for 1 year since we would have a much better savings cushion (but the one we have now is pretty good). But I seriously doubt my schedule will be as flexible as it is now.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

what field do you work in? I don't think you will have too much trouble finding a job. Also it may take a while to conceive. Just keep in mind that you will not be eligible for FMLA if you have been working less than 12 months at one place. This is my dilemma right now. I'm an RN and I was lucky, they hired me when I was 6 months pregnant. I don't care about the financial part as much as I will only get a max of 6 weeks off after baby is born and they don't have to give you your position back after these 6 weeks. My boss has been extremely great working things out with me, she promised me to hold my job while I'm out but it will still be extremely hard to go back to full time 12hrs after only 6 weeks. If you feel that its the right time then go for it.
