Police Check and Medicals

Should I wait until I get the Packet 3 in the mail or just go ahead and make an appointment for a medical (DCF doctor approved) and fingerprints so when the packet comes in the mail, I'll be ready??

I'm just worried the Embassy may correlate the dates and realise I had the documents before the Embassy sent the packet.

Any input on whether you have been through this or not would be great. Thanks VJ'ers!!

It's not unreasonable to get your police certificates, since you know that they're required and some can take a little while to come through. Same with the medical, although it might be worth calling the panel physician and asking what they need in order to offer you an appointment (in London, they want your embassy case number, which you only get once you've got past the NVC stage but I appreciate that it's a little different with DCFs).

Both the police certs and your medical should be considered valid for 1 year from their dates.

I ordered my husbands police certificate when we sent in our first I-130, knowing we'd need it and it could take a while -12 weeks according to the website - but it only took about 6.

I booked our medicals the day I got the letter with our case numbers (they need that in London).

Now I'm just waiting for my interview letter to arrive.

Sorry to pester with another question - this seems the roughly the right topic though.

The Police check - I will process the UK one as this is the mandatory one but I also spent time from February 04 to May 05 travelling, in which I had a working holiday visa in Australia. I spent initially 6 months in Australia, and then returned for another 4 and a half months. I undertook work in both trips (all legal), but was wondering if this requires me to get a police check for my time in Australia.

So far I have seen 2 different sources stating need for police checks when overseas, 1 saying any time spent in a country over 6 months, and another one over 12 months. I was never permanently there so I am slightly confused if I should just get one anyway.

Any advice, greatly appreciated.

Our Story

Met in September 2006 through a mutual friend (S being the UK citizen) P studying over here at an American Uni (she is originally from NY)

Xmas 2006 S went to visit P's family (repeated very year since)

2007 moved in together

3rd January 2010 - S asked P to marry him in NY she said yes

8th May 2010 - married in London at Morden Park House

20th May - sent in I-130

22nd July - I-130 Approved

24th July - Packet 3 received

31st August - Medical

Moving out of our flat in London on 1st September, P returning to set up home in NY.

10th November 2010 - the plan will hopefully be for P to fly back to London and together take a transatlantic cruise together across to NY with visa in hand.

If there is any evidence that you existed in Oz (rent checks, employment of any kind, studying etc) then definitely do one. If you were just here on holiday and had no 'base' of any kind, then you don't need to do one.

My advice is, just apply for one and if you aren't eligible, they will send your application back and refund your money. A friend had that happen - always good to err on the side of caution when it comes to this.

We did both even before we filed the papers! We were in Denmark. We moved out of our house at the end of March 2009, came to US for a week to get our house and stuff set up, returned to Denmark on April 25th, had the medical in Aarhus then went to Copenhagen and filed the paperwork on May 1st. No problems at all! We also got the police certificate in March.

I don't think you need to obtain an Australian police certificate

The guidelines say that you only need to obtain a police certificate from a foreign country if you "lived in a different country for more than 12 months" and "was 16 years or older at that time"

The '6 months' you are seeing is for K visas - not IR/CR visas.
