Here's an interesting one- Did my taxes and left out my wife's W-2 info and I get back $2000 from State and Federal. Did the same thing but kept my wife's and left mine out and she gets back $3500/$2500.

Add both of our W2s together and we owe $700 to feds and get back $600 from State. Whas up with that!!

Mine and my wife's works out about the same as yours, but because of the $1,000 child tax credit we will get a small federal refund. State we will get just a little more than you are getting. Our reason is I claim 3 dependents federal and only one for state during the year.

I paid in state and federal taxes what my wife made for the year.

We even see a few from Ontario (Ottowa area, mostly).

It's Ottawa. Ottawa. Ottawa. Got it?

Not the first time you've intentionally (?) misspelled the name.

It's nothing less than the capital city of your neighbor to the north. You claim so much insight into so many subjects, you're infallible on everything from climate change to immigration law to abortion to FOX news. But you insist on misspelling the name of my home town. Sorry, a pet peeve, but when you catch me referring to Berlington Vermunt on a regular basis, you can return the favor.

I mean no disrespect to my many good friends in Canada, where I have leived and worked and frequent several times a week, but it is simply a fact that the government is largely relieved of military obligation by the USA and this results in a huige dividend that can accrue to the Canadian population. I am very glad it is the case and have no ill will, like I said, better that than having North Korea short walk from my house.

Well if the citizens of America demanded their government stop meddling abroad and prevented US corporations from exploiting other nations, the US would not be a target of hatred by half the world. Foreign nations don't leave Canada alone because they are worried the US will attack, they leave Canada alone as Canada has done nothing to them. Like most other nations, Canadians keep to themselves and worry about their own mess.

Don't for a second think that Bin Laden woke up one day and decide to hate on America.

How many people actually received "making work pay" benefits? The SS office says it only went to people who receive SS benefits or Railroad benefits. Apparantly this was some sort of social security thing and apparantly its going to mean an extra $600 credit.

As far as I can make out, everyone is eligible for the Make Work Pay, subject to income limits. Check Schedule M for details, but you must make at least $6451 (file single) or $12,903 (filing joint), and it phases out starting at $75000 (single) and $150000 (joint).

The railroad/SS benefits stuff only applies if you received this income during the year, and were paid your "Make Work Pay" during 2009. For most of us regular salaried folks this does not apply and you claim your credit now. It's a $400 credit (single) or $800 credit (joint). I am not an accountant or tax professional. Use at your own risk.

You also need to include the 7% federal sales tax in Canada, plus provincial sales tax (8% in Quebec) PLUS the helath insurance premium you pay when you register your vehicle.

5% federal sales tax in Canada. BC sales tax is 7%.

Health insurance premium on car registration? I've never heard of such a thing. How do health insurance and car registration even connect to each other?

Let's not forget that the US has all sorts of fun taxes that are illegal in Canada like

a) city income tax (even if you work in the city but don't live there)

b) property tax on your cars

c) city & county sales taxes

d) property taxes that are ridiculously high in comparison to Canada.

WHAT? Sorry, but we CAn go down that road. Canada has a miniscule military compared to ours (damn good, do not get me wrong, they are top notch troops and top notch equipment, most made in the USA or Britian) and they CAN do this because they have a huge and powerful and very reliable neighbor to the south and nearly ALL the Canadian population lives near this neighbor.

The military budget is too darn big here in the US. And we have to pay for it.

You might not know anything about the economy, but I agree with you on foreign policy.
