IF your Husband was me, he'd say "Take sleeping pills after the meal is served and sleep on the airplane, when we hit the ground we will be ready to go!

I do this every time and the trip seems like 2 or 3 hours max.

Suck it up soldier :)

I assume that last from Danno was directed at the OP, but I should have reversed the order of my comments for the "rest" to make a little more sense.

Just want your opinion. Would you rather just get picked up by your family at the airport right after u land or" crash" at a hotel for a day just to sleep ,shower and get orientated???? Hubby and I are going back to Philippines after 3 years we get there at 11 am local time; however its after taking a long overnight flight. Me , being the American, want to just take a shower and pass out, before being inundated with family members and possibly taking a 4 hour ride in traffic (Manila) before we get to his house. My husband is cheap LOL an prob will not go for the hotel, however I know he is gonna be cranky when he lands....heheh. what would u do???

Get him to go for the hotel idea. The hyatt hotel and casino or the rothman. The rothman is about $55.00 and a very average place or go for the better one at $ 160.00 PER NITE. But the rothman is very clean

 I try a similar technique every time I fly to India. I try to 'time' my sleep so I arrive in India in the proper state - awake if I get there in the morning, sleepy if I get there at night.

It never works. I sleep on flights but the quality of sleep is never good.

Regardless, I have a 'plan' for my upcoming flight. Time will tell how it works out. It requires me to fall asleep shortly after takeoff and wake up in about 5 hours and stay up till the end.

I need a plan for our future trip as well, I can never sleep on planes. I am going to take tylenol PM...but I don't even know if it will work! I don't fall asleep easy. The travel tiredness and jet leg are torture imo for the first couple days.

As others have said, my husband's family would be insulted if we arrived and stayed at a hotel overnight. We arrive at night and there isn't bad traffic so it's maybe an hour ride to their place. I can't see staying in a hotel for that case. But they do have a decent bathroom! That's a plus. And it's more a celebration thing when we arrive, they would be very bummed out not to welcome us at the airport.

Yeah, you're usually so tired when you get on that flight because you just spent hours driving to the airport and going through security and waiting at the gate. And then you 'sleep' on the flight but if you're po' like me you're in economy and sleeping sitting up which isn't the best sleep to begin with. Add on the frequent interruptions from people talking, children screaming, people asking you to move cuz they have to piss and attendants asking if you want food..... fuhhgeddaboutit! You arrive at your destination even more tired.

Most of us are po' and in economy.

Oh man, we first have to go to Tampa then Newark THEN the long flight. :crying: By the time the plane is ready to take off from Newark, I am exhausted. And can't sleep. The people didn't bother me but I question eating dinner at 11pm while some are already starting to doze off and breakfast at the unknown time of day in the time warp of such a long flight. Then it's past dinner time already on arrival.

A soft bed at the end of the journey would be nice in a hotel, b/c now that I think of it- the hard Indian version of a bed is killer!!

I hope the OP has a soft bed at least.

Last time I was in India, I stayed at a Sheraton for 2 days before leaving India. I was able to swing it because I had done all my courtesy visits by then and paid my respects to everyone who felt they deserved it and imbibed 'wisdom' from everyone who felt they had some to give. It was totally worth it. The bed was amazing, the bathroom was impeccable and the food was awesome.

Nice....I don't see that happening for me. I do have a nice toilet at my inlaws thankfully. But last year it had an open window area in that bathroom(center of building, exhaust type window) and meskeeters were biting me all the time. They put up a screen now. I don't know why I was the only one getting bitten! Now without that, it should be even better.

Yeah I am a mosquito magnet too. I hate it. That reminds me I need to get some deep woods deet. I will be in the countryside for a few days, outside the city, and there are ponds everywhere... it looks nice from inside a train looking out but when you're there it's like the whole place is colonized by mosquitoes. It's their kingdom and I'm the visitor.

I don't know that my husband's family would be insulted if we chose to stay at a hotel, but why would we want to? We are going there to spend time with his family and since we have so little of it anyway, we want to spend as much time with them as we can. Plus, they are well-traveled themselves so they understand that we want to shower, rest, etc. when we arrive.

I am guessing it is more of an issue in countries with poor transportation systems like the Phil or India... places where landing at your destination means hours (sometimes days) remains between you and your final destination.

One of my fathers friends trips to India involves a 2-day journey by auto rickshaw, train and canoe to his family's village.

That's true. My inlaws aren't well traveled but when we arrived to their place last year it was near midnight, and this year will be similar. They had food for us but let us do what we needed to after out initial greetings. They understood how tired we were and that we felt all yucky and needed showers.

That's not all either. Then there the water buffalos that chill out in/near all the ponds. Get too close and they charge. You get startled and slip on a big pile of buffalo dung. It's good I don't have a weak heart :P
