Yes, you can translate yourself. Although here in Brazil you don't need to translate into English as the all the consuls speak portuguese.

If you do yourself just make sure to add a note at the end of the page saying something like:

I, <your name>, certify that I am fluent in the English and <your language> languages, and that the above document is an accurate translation of the document entitled “<name of the police certificate in your language>”.

You didn't need to translate it, for the embassy stage the documents can be in the official languages of the country.

I left mine in French and had no trouble.

As others have said - you may not need to translate it at all. Most all Embassies/Consulates do not require it translated when it is from the country you're being interviewed in. (In other words, a Belgium police certificate in Belgium for example.)
