China mulls setting up military base in Pakistan

BEIJING: China has signaled it wants to go the US way and set up military bases in overseas locations that would possibly include Pakistan.

...

"It is baseless to say that we will not set up any military bases in future because we have never sent troops abroad," an article published on Thursday at a Chinese government website said. "It is our right," the article said and went on to suggest that it would be done in the neighborhood, possibly Pakistan.

"As for the military aspect, we should be able to conduct the retaliatory attack within the country or at the neighboring area of our potential enemies. We should also be able to put pressure on the potential enemies' overseas interests," it said.

A military base in Pakistan will also help China keep a check on Muslim Uighur separatists fighting for an independent nation in its western region of Xingjian, which borders the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Beijing recently signed an agreement with the local government of NWFP in order to keep a close watch on the movement of Uighur ultras.

wrong on that. the idea of setting up in paki is a poke in obama's (America's) right eye, and the stick is sharp.

if bush were in the chair the words would not have been spoken.

Not everything is about the USA. Pressuring India is most definitely China's main aim here. The Chinese view India as their main industrial and economic competition in the 21st Century and anything they can do to load the dice they will do.

China is a long standing military hardware supplier to Pakistan, much as Russia is to India. China is considering selling a large number of its latest combat aircraft to Pakistan, a move which will help Pakistan offset India's involvement in the new Russian stealth fighter, the PAK-FA which flew for the first time today.

The fact that it will niggle America, having a competitor in the "world influence" game probably won't make the Chinese any less enthusiastic about the deal, especially if they can score some American tech "by accident" from the long running Afghan/Pakistan border operations.

But no, it's not directly a poke in Obama's eye and yes, they'd still be talking about it if Baby Bush was still POTUS. Because it's in THEIR backyard, not America's.

China never had military presence that far from China and usually hesitates to get involved abroad. They are touchy about it because they don't want to be dominated by foreign powers as they were for a 100 years.

By the same token, they haven't called for the withdrawal of U.S. bases in the Far East because they see generally the U.S. as a stabilizing influence as long as it's not too close to their borders.

But China isn't in it for world-politik reasons. It's purely personal, with the internal troubles with the Uighurs and the growing competitive streak with India. The Chinese are indeed happy that the USA is playing global policeman. They're just fine with that. So long as their national interest doesn't come under the spotlight.
