photocopy of marriage certificate

Hi everyone!

I have a question regarding the marriage certificate.

We sent a photocopy of our marriage certificate with our AOS packet and I remember that the photocopy came out exactly like the original (minus the dry seal, of course).

Now, we're about to file our Report of Marriage to my home country's (Philippines) consulate general so it can be recorded with the National Civil Registry - this time, I used our all-in-one printer at home to make copies and it came out with "UNAUTHORIZED COPY - VOID" notes all over the page. Now I understand it's because of the security paper that the certified copy is printed on by the county clerk/recorder but I'm wondering why it didn't come up on the other machine? Has this happened to anyone before?

I was actually surprised when the photocopy came out with the "UNAUTHORIZED COPY - VOID" emblazoned all over it! I was about to panic when I remembered that I read about it here on VJ. I'm just confused why it didn't appear when my husband used a different copier @_@

u need 1 original marriage certificate with license read the requirements

with 4 copies!!

What are you talking about? Did you post this in the wrong place? This doesn't answer the OP.

---

To the OP, newer printers have a different "light" built in. It's likely that the printer you were using the first time was much older and didn't have the required light frequency to reveal the "hidden text".

Come to think of it, the first copier was actually rather old and we just bought the one I used. That explains it! Thank you! ^___^

You are supposed to send a certified original. You most likely will get an RFE for that. This is why we suggest you obtain more than one certified (with the seal/embossed stamp) marriage certificate.

If you read the I-485 instructions, it clearly states:

Copies. Unless specifically required that an original document be filed with an application or petition, an ordinary legible photocopy may be submitted.

Then under Evidence of Eligibility:

copy of your marriage certificate

A lot of people have sent photocopies without getting RFEs.

"send a photocopy of a certified marriage certificate"

As for sending a certified copy of the marriage certificate, yes, it is required for the Report of Marriage to be submitted to the Consulate General but they do send back the original. :)

Anyway, I called the Military Helpline just in case and they told me that ordinary legible photocopies are fine. They did say that they usually ask to bring the original to the interview (in case you have one). ^_^ No worries, if they do ask for the original - we have one ready.

Hi! It depends on where you got married - you have the file the Report of Marriage with the consulate that has jurisdiction over your place of marriage :)

You can find a list of the Philippine Consulates in the U.S. here: http://www.midheaven.org/2009/10/22/philip...-united-states/

If the links don't work, you can do a search on Google :D

Let me know if you have any problems!
