You people are freaks if you're in the tiny minority without TVs or don't watch.

A larger related group are those that own TVs but rarely watch which I think is growing.

I grew up watching TV all the time but didn't watch TV on and off for 8 years. Figures that during that time Nielsen ratings sent me a notice to be one of their viewers. I always wanted to be one the select few to steer TV programming but by that time, I wasn't addicted to TV and had other things to do so I just threw it away.

Yeah, I don't think a PC with internet will ever replace a regular TV. For one, you can now have your own home theater system relatively cheap, which is great when there are a lot of people who want to watch what you are watching. Second, with a DVR, you can record your favorite programs and watch them at your own convenience as well as skip through the commercials. Third, watching TV is passive - you don't have to move it or do anything once it's on. I like that. Hooray for TV! Moderation in all things...as Mr. Guggisberg, my Am. Lit. teacher used to say.

My PC replaced home theater already. There's a HTPC concept where the PC removes the wiring, additional receivers/equalizers/amplifiers, DVD player, Blu-Ray player...or any other hookups that clutter the shelfs.

I have a clean/neat/sleek living room with a PC underneath the TV. (Not the big powerful PC I have). Just that HTPC, and the TV hookup and the in-wall speaker systems connected to the X-fi sound card.

How long does it take though to start the whole system up just to watch Dr. Phil?

It's on standbye.

I use a solid state drive as well. The Media Center Remote responds in less than a microsecond. As soon as I hit the remote, the HTPC turns on and voila! Set it to FOX and bam, Dr. Phil. :D
