Canadian vaccine costs

I emailed Dr. Seidan's office. A person named Erlene Webster responded (within a few minutes actually) saying their website was up to date with respect vaccinations. Thankfully my fiance' hadn't picked up the prescriptions yet for Hep. A and Hep. B (and after reading some more about the reasons to have them, my fiance' doesn't fit into the high risk categories). So thanks VJ members for saving my fiance' and I $140!

My fiance' went to his general practitioner yesterday to get started on the process of getting his vaccine records for his medical exam and AOS. They gave him a prescription for the doses of Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccine. He just emailed me and said each dose is $70! Does that seem normal? Is getting a prescription normal for vaccines in Canada?

He is having his blood drawn to check for his other immunities as he only had a limited vaccine record in his files. He is in Ontario.

I had Hep A/B twinrix vaccination last year prior to going on a trip to the Dominican; prescribed by my doctor or I could have went to the Health Clinic - either way you pay the fee; there are 3 required doses with time lapses in between. The cost was $70 for each dose.

I know you've sorted it all out now, but I just wanted to point out that even if the CDC required Hep A but the Montreal consulate did not, you wouldn't get stuck at the AOS stage. You would just need to get the vaccination when in the US. A lot of consulates around the world do not even require immunizations to be granted the visa, It just causes a little more hassle after your moving.

It's actually pretty standard for Ontario physicians to charge for certain immunizations that aren't covered under OHIP. I was rather surprised when I had to pay $180 each for the first two HPV shots, and then came to the US and was told that under my American health insurance they would have been completely free. So I got the last shot free of charge.
