My fiancee is from the Southern provinces and speaks Visaya. I have searched online and found very limited resources for learning Visaya. I have located some products that teach Cebuano, but she tells me that the languages are similar but not the same. I am very interested in any advice on self-help programs, tutorials, or books that will assist me in learning her language.

Thanks.

I can't lead you to the learning resources you want but I want to appreciate your efforts in learning Cebuano-Visayan.

I have been teaching my husband that language but he only knows five words: sili, tinola, salamat, adobo, and bangus.

BTW, you better post under the Philippines subforum.

Hakuna matata.

God bless us all.

And oh... have you tried researching if Rosetta Stone has a Cebuano-Visayan kit? I'm sure they sell one for the Filipino (Tagalog) language.

There is not much you can get from websites but your fiance can help you a lot. You can learn when you are chatting/talking with her...ask her to mix a lil visayan words on her sentence and slowly you will learn some words.

I have known my husband for 4 yrs now and these are the visayan words that he remember: maayong buntag, maayong gabii, kutsara, tinidor, bulad, babae, gihigugma taka, palangga, ayaw lagi ba, sige and the rest are "sensitive words" ;)

I salute you for your interest to learn the visayan language. :) Goodluck!

Try ebay I have found some resources that sell the classes the government uses to teach people. If that is a bust try Amazon.com For rare languages you may have to poke a bit or in ebayese search descriptions

good luck

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I suggest that she prepare some flashcards for you - about 200 new words each week, then 10 longish sentences each week (to learn sentence structure )

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

My wife is from Leyte and has been teaching me both Visayan and Tagalog, but I will say Togalog is easier, at lest for me.

Also a good thing to learn is to cook Filipino food! I enjoy cooking, and living in Hawaii has given me an opportunity to learn many styles of Filipino cooking. My wife love’s that I can make her style of food.
