This thought just jumped to mind, maybe the percentage of aid given has a little something to do with this?

only 24 percent per cent of Americans own passports

On average, more than 70 percent of Europeans and between 60 and 70 percent of Australians have passports

"And, really, it is embarrassing to think that a country which arguably holds the most influence internationally out of any country in the world has so few citizens that have actually seen that world about which they are creating policies."

What's your beef with Australia... you don't like going down under?

This thread is focused in on the disparity between pledges and actual aid. Australians pledge almost twice as much as they deliver. Americans tend to give what they say they will.

So really, they're saying they will give, but then they don't.

I'm thinking maybe because A LOT of Australians travel and have probably travelled to those Tsunami stricken places have an opinion about whether they want to have their money go there or not, even during a horrible crisis. By government "pledging" the robin hoods will STFU and be happy, but not delivering because they really don't intend on letting go of that money in the first place, because they believe will be more wisely put to use in Australia.

Donors pledge, governments don't.
