Unfortunately we live in an increasingly satirical and sarcastic world in which sincerity is eschewed as being 'trite' or 'emotional' and most people don't understand the true meaning of satire and instead use sarcasm as an umbrella for rudeness.

I agree...in my post I should have clarified that I was speaking directly about the whole Islam bashing thing by Mawilson...it's supposedly sarcasm by him now. I remember the posts for awhile now, and it seems sarcasm is a newer excuse to write the things posted about that subject- but there were times when it was openly NOT sarcasm from him. So who knows.

I am not even Muslim or middle eastern and neither is my husband or any family members- I just think it's rotten things to write.

Jonathan Swift famously used satire to mock the powerful and influential forces of his day - the Church, the Monarchy, the elites. There's a long tradition of using satire in English prose since at least Swift's time (> 300 years) to sharpen a point an author is trying to make.

Now, I agree there's a difference between good political satire and outright meanness and cruelty.

I'm confused, how does a picture of baby bombs relate to ordinary muslims? I don't get how one can consider that an affront towards muslims unless you can't distinguish between normal people and extremists. Perhaps that's the problem, I am supposed to believe that if a baby bomb is muslim, then I consider all muslims capable of despicable acts?

I didn't see the original thread, nor do I think I want to. I understand sarcasm, satire, dark irony, whatever, but this doesn't seem to have the same ring behind as A Modest Proposal, for example. Especially on a board with a high number of Islamic members. Is the meaning behind this 'satire' to say the opposite? Or is it just an excuse to insult Islam while pretending to be super intelligent? I'm confused.

The meaning behind the satire is what generally makes something satirical. Sarcasm -- especially 'dark sarcasm' is really at the heart intended to be bitter and caustic and not offer any solution. Satire is generally attacking or bringing to light a social or political issue the originator wants people to consider seriously.
