I find these topics a bit amusing & insulting! We are a multi-cultural country, hence why we all have been thru the immigration process, and there is NEVER anything positive about the experiences here, it's always what you don't like, can't stand, or find undesirable about living here! We don't claim to have original foods, we don't claim the international foods we do serve here our own!

I am married to a wonderful man who happens to be a Chef from Australia, & I have never heard him complain because he can't get kangaroo here! I mean is this what we have been reduced too?

I mean if it's that bad or undesireable. . . .

There is no such thing as American cuisine. The only food "invented" by Americans is Hot Dogs and Burgers, basically highly unhealthy junk food. Everything else has been brought over by the immigrants who make up the fabric of this country today. A country, by the way, that has the highest rate of obesity in the known Universe.

For that reason people outside the US might want to experience Italian, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, Armenian, or Libanese cuisine, but not American. America is, and will ever be, a fast food, cheap, throw away society. Those with a taste for the eclectic and the financial means to enjoy life will look elsewhere.

This is just one of those posts that makes me roll my eyes, and is exactly the kind of talk that makes a lot of Americans think of Europeans as snobs and elitists. So, great job, perpetuating that one, "Hans."

You can eat as "eclecticly" as you want here, should you so desire.

Anyway, there's a lot of foods that are uniquely American things. Yes, a lot of them have originated in other countries, because the only people living here until 1492 were Native Americans. However, in most of these cases, they are nothing like they are "back home" where they originated from.

Some American things to try:

"Soul Food" -- sweet potato pie, black eyed peas, grits, cornbread, etc.

Creole food is uniquely American (I challenge you to find anywhere in the world with categorically better food than New Orleans)

Mexican/Tex-Mex (there is a big difference between authentic Mexican food and Tex-Mex)

Fried Chicken as it is known, worldwide, in its most common form, originated in the South as a collaboration between black slaves and white slave owners.

Pretty much anything with corn -- sweet corn with butter in Iowa in July is unbeatably good

New York style pizza

Chicago style pizza

Breakfast cereal

Jello

Barbecue could have its own section altogether, because of the many variances.

Carolina BBQ

Memphis BBQ

Kansas City BBQ

etc.

And who could forget SPAM... ;)

I can't find any word from my original post that is insulting. I was plainly asking if you have noticed.

I wasn't whining at all. You might want to read the first part of your reply and see if it's relevant to what my question was.

I'm sure there are many more, but this is what comes to mind without having to think about it. lol

  • Cheesesteaks
  • black eye peas
  • mashed potatoes
  • rice and gravy
  • Soft pretzels

Firstly I did not say YOU were insulting I said these types of posts are insulting.

I do not need to re-read anything. I am just stating that I find it amusing that you have nothing to point out but the negative, & about our food for crying out loud!

Maybe YOU should re-read because I never used the word whining, I am entitled to my opinion of your post, one of the many beautiful parts of living in this great, multicultural country!

As I have said, I was merely asking what American cuisine really is. I don't even know what YOUR (American) FOOD is. How could I point out the negative? You really should read again. In the first place, I didn't point out anything. I was asking. That's all.

And oh... I am not looking for any semantic squabbling so if you want to say something else that has nothing to do with my original post/question, just skip it.

You are indeed entitled to your own opinion and interpretation to what I have written. You must know that I wasn't pointing out the negative as you interpret it.

a food fight in "What American Cuisine Really Is"

 Not me. I don't engage in fights.

It's just the translation or interpretation part that has gone erroneous.

People read and understand differently. It's their misconception of the simple question.
