Kentucky: Doctors are now required to show and explain an ultrasound to all women before abortion

Did you read something about a "doctors lecture" in the law that I missed or is that you embellishing the facts again?

Why do you see the "facts" as a negative?

We are told over and over the line about a "clump of cells", I would think the Pro abortion crowd would have thought this law up themselves as now the mother could verify that "Yes it is just a clump of cells".

It might even give piece of mind to the woman after she hears the toilet flush and her potential child is swiftly removed from her life... like snot, in a Kleenex.

Why would anyone feel "worse about this decision" if this blob of cells is meaningless?

Are you concerned that looking at this small spot on an ultrasound a women might realize "Dayum, the only thing that blob needs is "time" and food" and that will be the Daughter I help ready for her prom.... or son who stands muddy at my back door with a new found puppy?

Maybe you are right... less information is better.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Legislation passed by the Kentucky State Senate would make it mandatory for doctors to give women wanting an abortion an explanation of what's shown on the ultrasound.

Above is the opening quote from the article on this legislation.

Danno are you incapable of reading comprehension? Your opening comment indicates not...

A woman seeking an abortion should not be forced through a lecture of any sort, forcing the doctor to run through the ultrasound, with the clear objective of convincing her the blob is a precious life she should either save or realize she is committing an act paramount to murder is wrong. It would be hurtful at an already stressful time.

True, with time and food the 'blob' will likely eventually become a new human being, it is incomprehensible that any woman seeking an abortion does not understand this fact, but wishes to prevent it, thus is seeking an abortion.

The legislation in the OP is a patent attempt to persuade women they are doing the wrong thing in seeking an abortion, likely based on the morality of the zealots who passed the legislation.

I have no desire to get in a flame war with anyone even though my view will not be liked by some. But I find this interesting and good. If people actually realize what they are doing with an abortion, it may stop some of those who use it as a form of birth control. The fact is that it's a tiny life forming and people want to get rid of it like it's nothing important. So, it should be interesting. People know where babies come from yes, but may remove themselves from the idea that an abortion is destroying life because they don't want to think about it. Out of sight, out of mind.

If you see "lecture" where it doesn't exist then I can't help you with that.

If you support medical procedures done on patients without A) consent B) complete information, then we will just have to disagree.

I don't guess I need to mention many... if not most of these Abortions are done at PLanned Parenthood type places... I rather doubt they are going to be "Lecturing" their customers out of a purchase.

Even if they do comply with the Ultrasound law.

Women who get abortions are well aware of the implications of their decisions for the most part, that it is killing a potential baby. Once the decision has been made to abort, it really is very unnecessary to go through the motions over again just to satisfy some moral crusade by certain legislaters. The law should not be used in this way.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Danno, learn to read. Where does it say anything about this law completing the information process for the woman? It doesn't. That the legislators, and you yourself feel it does is based on your own bias against abortion. Don't like abortion? Don't get one. Don't force women to sit through an explanation of what is on their ultrasound. Pretty simple concept really. I know you don't really get it though.

As to your second point, yes indeed, some doctors will give half hearted attempts at complying with this law, thus showing how stupid and ineffective it is. Others will give it a serious go at attempting to persuade the woman how 'alive' the blob is in blatant attempt to turn her from the path of abortion. The latter being what the idiots who crafted the legislation obviously hope for.

They have every right to wish to keep the matter as simple and uncomplicated as possible. Abortion as birth control tends to be self limiting in that eventual sterilization becomes a factor.

No flame though, I understand completely your points. But what you said is clearly the thought process that went in to this legislation, 'she wouldn't get an abortion if she knew she was ending a tiny life forming within.' That is also the reason this law is so ludicrous in my opinion though. Most women understand that.

Your flailing, the Gov't is involved in implementing guidelines for a whole list of professions so a customer is well informed.

IN almost all of these cases the customer/ patient is an adult, in the area of a Abortion, we even have a greater probability of the patient not fully grasping what's going on as the customer is often a teenager.

Why are fully informed decisions a bad thing in any transaction?

I don't get the idea behind this. Surely if you get pregnant you are going to know what the implications of that are, hence the desire for the abortion.

Reading this thread anyone would think that getting pregnant is like having some indigestion or something

From the original article. I did not excerpt this part as I did not consider it relevant. However, it has been brought up by other posters so here goes:

The director of EMW Women's Surgical Center, which performs abortions in Louisville, said doctors perform ultrasounds prior to performing all abortions, but most women do not want to look at the pictures or know the results.

Pardon? If you think it is appropriate to try and force a guilt trip on a woman seeking an abortion, you are ignorant. Guess that would be why you have the classy name?

just pretend it's white guilt

One would know what the implications are but not the development at that stage of pregnancy.

This is what the Ultrasound offers, complete information.

What difference does that make? Can't it reasonably be assumed that at the point that the woman is in the clinic awaiting for the procedure that the decision has already been made regardless of what an ultrasound says?

Shouldn't the decision of the individual be respected and not subject to some patronizing moral paternalism?

Can we also assume, as I believe is the case, that doctors already offer counselling prior to doing the procedure so that the patient is aware of what it means and what is involved?
