I agree, that this guy if/when found guilty deserves the full punishment of the law. If he is not executed, he certainly should never be put back into society.

Incidentally I'd be curious to know how many people here were actually the victim of sexual abuse as a child, or are the parents or relatives of a child who was so abused.

I myself was never a victim .. but I have family members that were and quite a few friends that were.. I do not take kindly to it at all.

Some people seem to think its acceptable, in the absence of polite argument, to resort to insults and indulging their personal dislikes - as per the H'WOOD MORONS thread. Typically whenever they are unable or unwilling to address the points raised. This guy has continually claimed that I lack position on every issue (and you agreed with him) - yet each time I asked for 'ambiguity' and 'lack of clarity' to be pointed out it is met with..... silence.

I rarely start out flaming someone - but I will certainly respond to it in kind.

The discussion in this thread keeps going back to how "rare" this crime is...how relatively small a percentage of the population are child molesters. But i have to disagree with these assumptions.

researchers estimate that 10% of boys and 25% of girls will be molested at some point during their childhood. that's right...for girls, it's one in four.

even these researchers concede that exact numbers may be much higher, because victims of child sexual abuse often do not report it, for fear of shame or retaliation. many victims (myself included) will think that it is somehow their fault. i have still not reported my abuser...and probably never will, because he is a member of my family. i live every day with the guilt and shame, wondering if i've made a selfish decision to protect my own pride, and putting other children at risk. my abuser now has two daughters of his own. i pray for their safety.

stop right now and think of four women in your life. which one of the four women do you think has been a victim of childhood sexual abuse? you might be surprised.

I know of two people (although not in my immediate family) who were subjected some form of physical/sexual abuse as children (not rape however).

I'd be curious to know whether the study you referred to indicates sexual abuse specifically, as opposed to say - verbal and physical, which I would argue is much more common, and potentially as damaging. While I would hardly call my background abusive - I can attribute certain aspects of my upbringing (resulting from my mother's mental illness) to subsequent depression through my teens are early 20's. Not that I would equate depression with 'rape-trauma' - but you see what I'm getting at.

That said, while I agree that many crimes involving sexual assualt and rape go unreported, its certainly the case that pedophilia and specifically that resulting in murder of the child are very rare - yet they seem to be the most widely reported, which I think does not reflect the true picture of child abuse, which is more insidious and tends to be a "closed door" affair.

Going back to the legislation mentioned at the outset of the thread, I find it interesting that when the UK News of the World decided to print names and addresses of abusers living around the UK (I already mentioned that pediatrician lunacy), that many of the people who acted on the information and were who involved in violent acts against pedophiles (and those they mistook for them) actually had children on the "At Risk" register.
