What I think is important to remember is that most of them don't seem to want to be pedophiles. And seem to have a problem keeping it in their pants anyway... eh....hm.

They're obviously mentally ill individuals, and when other criminals are declared mentally ill they receive different treatment. Obviously pedophilia is a sickness, and people commit these crimes for no other motivation than the sickness itself (unlike violent crimes which usually have motivation unless committed by other mentally ill people).

We should keep trying to find a medication to keep these people on, becuase they're human beings who were probably victims when they were young, too. And until then, we just should not be releasing them onto the general population...

In that case - do the public have a right to know where the generally mentally ill / criminally insane people are living that it is singled out for this kind of legislation. I think the reasoning is entirely sentimental and this legislation is little more than grandstanding.

I'd even suggest that pedophilia is itself in a minority in terms of common mental illnesses and likely you'd find that undiagnosed / untreated schizophrenics (for example) represent a greater general threat to public safety than the pedophiles.

I agree that it's grandstanding. I can already look up pictures of all the sexual predators in my area in the local online database anyway. I think laws like this are essentially hypocritical. Why do we even let these people live in those places? Either we're ok with them living next door to the Brady bunch or they should be locked up rehabilitating or being imprisoned, however you see it. Either we're giving them a second chance or we're not. Period.

I don't know why you keep asking why it's in the public consciousness so much. As Charles said, and as I've seen, there are plenty of sexual offenders living near me. People can teach their children to avoid them but most parents would prefer they were not there. The number of children who suffer abuse is staggering by some estimates (that I am too lazy to dig up right now).

Of course pedophiles are a small slice of the population.

It's in the public consciousness so much because it's human nature to fear what your instincts might not warn you could hurt your children (as most pedophiles seem like normal folks), and probably not because the media caused any sort of panic, IMO.

I think the new bill is good. I just watched John Walsh on Larry King tonight about the new bill. I have different opinions on this but having had a sexual offender in my former apartment complex changes my view a bit. I am a parent and I watch my kids as much as possible. You cannot however watch them 24/7 nor should you have to.

I would have to admit before I knew he was there I was a bit laid back when I let my kids go to the playground that was right outside my door. I could watch them from my 3rd floor balcony. However, after I knew he was in the complex, they didn't go out to the playground without me there. I was much more cautious after finding out he was living among us.

My first comment is that until you have a child that has been molested, or have been molested yourself, saying that it is hypocritical to have the pedophiles posted on the internet is way off. HOW the hell is it hypocritical? Parents have the right to know who these people are that live in their neighborhood. Do you think that the pedophiles will actually raise their hands up and say.."HEY!!! Here I am..watch your sons, or daughters because I am a pedophile and may want to do someting to them!" This topic does hit home and it is very sad when I see ppl comparing pedophiles to robbers and such. I can assure you it is not even remotely close to being on the same level. Some of you talk about treating them as human beings...come on now, we as adults know right from wrong. Are you saying that pedophiles don't because they are sick??? I can guarantee you, that they DO know what they are doing is wrong.

A few years ago, when I was still married to the ex, I was at home one day and there was a knock at my door. It was a lady from the neighborhood passing out leaflets with 4 different registered pedophiles within our area. One of them just lived right on the corner to me...literally a two minute walk. AND..it was right ACROSS FROM AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!!! This guy was literally sitting on his porch everyday watching the children play in the playground!! When someone from this pedophiles family found out that these leaflets were handed out, the cops were around...but not to reassure us about this pedophile, but to protect him and tell us that he HAD A RIGHT TO LIVE THERE!!! FFS...Well, guess what??? HE DID IT AGAIN!!!

Victims of this crime are in their own kind of prison for the rest of their lives when this happens to them. Yes, you can get counseling, yes you can learn how to cope and deal with it, but you never fully heal. This is an outrage. I say WAY TO GO MR. WALSH!!!!

Your own family friends make up another 25% of abusers so now you have to keep any friends out of your homes.

About 5% of child abusers are strangers...

....and research shows that most abusers were once abused themselves as children. Where do you stop???

Do some reasearch into your own family histories. There will be abuse in there maybe?

Parents certainly have a right to protect their kids, but if you have the right to protect them from pedophiles, why not drug dealers, junkies, schizophrenics, pyschopaths etc - yet you don't see people demanding to know where they live.

Kids are at an equal or greater risk from other types of criminals (based on the statistical likelihood of their occurence) than they are likely to be abducted and sexually abused by a complete stranger (and as the previous poster suggested - a lot of victims of sexual abuse are abused by family members.

Pedophilia is a politically charged issue that generates kneejerk reactions, where no such action is really justified. Society is a scary place if you start looking at who's living in your area.
