Hey,

We just got married last week and thought we'd filled everything out ready to mail more or less straight away..but what we didnt realise was that we'd not get our marriage cert straight away??!!!? Is this normal? We got married in Vegas and where told we had to wait 10 days before applying for the license, just read on their website it could take 3 weeks for it to arrive??!!? anyone got any suggestions?? We're living in San Diego so at a push we could drive over at the weekend and do it personally but even then do they give it to you straight away or mail to you??? Thought we where very organised.. apparently not! :o(

the other thing is.. in all the forms I used my maiden name, i assumed as this is the name they had on my K-1 this should be the name to apply under.. upon reading these posts uh-oh wrong again??? so i should be doing this in new married name?? I have no ID though stating this is my name?? very confused! So like the copies of visa/passport etc all have maiden name... Sorry lots of questions!!! Been using the K-1 visa forum and only just realised this is here!!

Any help much appreciated!!!

Did you change your name when you filled out the marriage license?

If you have chosen to use your husband's name when you got the marriage license, start using your new name in filling out the AOS forms.

If you took it to the county clerk after the wedding, it would have been returned faster to you. At least that's how it worked for me in L.A.

I hope you settle things soon.

For this reason (mainly) we took our signed marriage license to the County Clerk's office and had it recorded in person - got our certificate right away. Otherwise you're at the mercy of 'the system' to send you your certificate. Sometimes it doesn't take that long but usually a couple of weeks is normal. I'm not sure you can do anything about it now since it is already in 'the system.'

When you file for AOS (along with EAD and/or AP) you may use your married name on all the forms if you choose to be know by this name. EAD and PR/Green Card will be issued with what ever name you choose when you file.

Hi,

For me, we had a civil wedding in the courthouse here in Indiana. We got our marriage certificate the same day as we applied. Also, I had to change my name with the Social Security office here in Indiana. The marriage certificate only had my maiden name (bride) and then fiance's name (groom). For the AOS forms, I put my married name.
