Hello,

I had a question for anyone who can answer. Since I started the process of becoming a citizen, my marital status has changed. When I came to the United States, I was married to an American citizen, and it didn't work out, so we got divorced before the three years was up. So what is the waiting period for me to be able to apply for citizenship? Do I have to wait an extra two years after the divorce (since I am no longer married)? Or do I have to wait another five years and start the process all over again?

Also, how can I change my marital status with immigration? I wasn't aware that I had to inform them of the divorce, and now I am concerned because I want to apply for citizenship and I want them to be aware of everything (the divorce was over a year ago). Do I have to fill out a form or would a phone call/online change be sufficient?

Thank you very much.

5 years total based on your RESIDENT SINCE date on your greencard

no marital status update is done with immigration. You will indicate your current marital status when you are eligible and apply
