Yep. They don't know what can of worms they just opened themselves up to.

Usually what happens with these bans is that the controversy itself drives up sales.

Of course, in this case, the author and his publisher probably have cause to sue for defamation and loss of earnings.

Hansel and Gretel's stepmother planned on baking them in an oven. Sounds like Nazi propaganda to me.

It has its own name, the Streisand effect. Attempts to censor or ban information results in greater dissemination of said information.

Sounds like a good reason to separate education from the government. "pro-choice" people will be against that.

There are other reasons why the government should administrate the education system, that have nothing to do with your idea ofwanting to appear to have a consistent opinion.

"She said that that was what he wrote, and I said: ' ... It's a good enough reason for me to get rid of someone,' " said Hardy, who has complained vehemently about the volume of names being added to the curriculum standards.

This part is what really gets me. She has complained about the volume of names being added to the curriculum standards?! Because, my word, we don't want our children to READ!

This angers me so much. If a parent challenges a book or a group of parents tries to get a book removed from the curriculum at our school they must go through the Challenged Book process. Furthermore, we read every book we put on our curriculum and make sure they match up to the state standards. If anything is controversial, we have a back up book and we make sure it is justified by not only the standards but the catechist. That someone like this is allowed to be on the State Board of Education is just....I have no words.

I'm curious to know what basis such decisions are made on. Why is it, for example, that C.S. Lewis' Christian allegories are fine, but a picture book with a pagan or Marxist subtext isn't ?

Its doubly silly that the people who come up with these arbitrary standards never bother to read or watch the thing that they're objecting to. Just look at the stupidity over Harry Potter's "promotion" of witchcraft.

You realize, yes, in this PARTICULAR CASE, Ms. Leo was confused by the author's name, yes?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

This was amongst my daughter's favorite books when she was young. Along with the classic "Polar bear, Polar bear, what do you hear?".

I'm glad these dangerous and subversive books are finally being banned. It's about time someone took the initiative to get seriously back into the book banning business, and not just pussyfoot around!
