As I've been applying to jobs, I keep getting emails from 'employers' asking me for my credit report. I'm not sure what to think. My gut tells me that my credit report is not my employer's business (especially since I don't have any here in the US ). What say you all?

1. Two of my last employers asked for my credit report. I had the same reaction - none of their business. But, it was standard practice for these positions where I could have easily set up some fraud scheme...

2. In the US, well... I think I would give my agreement again but I would explain first that there is nothing to find.

Depending on what you do, or what your job would entail, companies frequently request credit checks.

Say - if your working in a bank, and you have $$$$ of outstanding credit bills, they may be suspect you might embezzle.

(they use it as a gauge for trustworthiness, and if your reliable.)

Most times they will have you sign a waiver, or it's buried under the rules for the job.

If they choose to use this credit report as an adverse factor, they are suppose to tell you and give you a copy of your report, and a pamplet explaining your rights under the FCRA.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Some companies request your permission to run a credit report (they can not without your permission) as part of their process - I've never seen anyone ask the potential employee to provide such a report though and I'd be leery of anyone asking me to do so - if they want it, let them pay to get it.

I totally disagree with this practice and thankfully most employers do not require this. I think their reasoning is - especially if the job involves money handling - they're looking for high debt or similar financial troubles that may make a person prone to theft (although I don't agree with that either).

Did you apply with these 'employers?'

I personally think this is freakishly weird Mal. While my Husband had more drug tests in Florida than he has ever had in his life - no one ever asked him for a credit report. His jobs did not involve handling funds though.

Now, if you had interviewed and were a perspective candidate, or they had offered you the job based on you providing a good credit report - that's one thing (still freakishly weird - but hey) - but to upfront ask before they have even met you - that's a tad odd.

I wouldn't do it.

Yeah, that is weird...

When they asked me, it was during the final step of the hiring process... I had the job already. They had me sign the authorization at at the same time as the other forms (taxes, etc.).

Could you call the HR of these companies and see if there's another way to proceed?

I agree with this.

I find it strange and would not do it based on an online application process. If I was in talks with the HR recruiter and it was part of their hiring process, I'd consider it.

In Canada, that's not standard practice to ask for your credit report (might even be illegal), even if you do work in finances, banking, etc.

Even if they ask for a credit report, it would be AFTER you have been offered the position and have signed the employment agreement.

Via Craiglist and Monster.

Sounds Phishy and Scammy in my opinion - you're going to click on a link and what are they going to ask you fir...your SSN? That's the important piece of information they would need to run a credit report and I wouldn;t do it. It doesn't sound like its on the up and up.

There's no way you should be asked to provide any of this information until you're later in the interview process at best. You should be signing a release form giving permission. Those sites can be good to apply initially, but if the company is really interested - they're going to contact you by phone and set-up an honest to gawd interview.

I work for a company that does Gov't contract work and we do a lot of secure stuff. I access the entire companies' personal info as part of my job - I wasn't even asked for my SSN until I arrived on Day 1.

No in Canada its not standard practice. I worked as a Controller at a large hotel/convention facility and when we hired people we would ask if they were bondable. This was a way around asking if they declared bankruptcy or not if they handle cash. I always thought it was ridiculous. People declared bankruptcy for more then the inability to pay bills. Doesn't make them someone who would take money that wasn't theirs. But no credit checks ever requested. I'd be a little leary of giving that information out.
