CR-1 visa... confused on SSN & green card process

Hi

My husband will be coming to America in the next month -- CR-1 visa...

He is an Indian Passport holder & will be getting some kind of stamp in his passport at the POE... correct? (is the stamp like a temporary green-card?)

I am confused on the process from there...

Does he automatically get his Social Security Card in the mail?

Does the official Green Card come in the mail automatically as well?

Or do we need to fill out forms and send them somewhere??

help! I dont want to miss something and not get something official done!!

They will stamp his passport that acts as a temp card for up to one year

SSN will come IF you indicated so on the DS-230 Part II... otherwise you will need to apply in person

Green card will be mailed automatically

In some cases people who checked the SSN box in their DS-230 do not get their SS card in the mail. Wait a week or two after he gets his green card in the mail (which can take up to 8 weeks after entering the country), if he still hasn't received his card, then go in person and apply for one.

--stamp in passport from POE acts as temp greencard - also called I-551 stamp.

--SSN is hit or miss, regardless of ticking off the box on the DS-230. Suggest you two go in to SSA Office on day 13 (from POE date) and apply. If any problem (cannot be accepted that day) , come back 2 days later. Then - after the application is accepted, go back next day and GET THE NUMBER . The card will show up within 2 weeks after you apply.

--greencard will show up between 10 to 45 days after POE date - NO ADDITIONAL FORMS NEEDED to receive it.

Be wary of the USCs address, though - if you've moved, be sure to fill out AR-11 immediately - and also change the address with the CBP staffer at the POE.
