He's perfectly innocent. Who doesn't have military weapons, plans to a U.S. military base and a Middle Eastern-style headress in their home. I keep mine handy just in case I need to go on a workplace shooting.

According to the NJ.COM article I linked to earlier, he also had plans of a civilian neighborhood. They aren't saying where it is, except that it isn't in NJ.

More details from NJ.COM:

Woodson, handcuffed and wearing a short-sleeved tan jumpsuit, made his first appearance on Tuesday at the New Jersey Superior Court in Somerville in front of Judge John H. Purcell.

Woodson was arraigned on all charges against him: unlawful possession of weapons, second degree; prohibited weapons, fourth degree; possession of a large amount of ammunition, fourth degree; two counts of possessing defaced firearms, fourth degree; obstruction of justice; and resisting arrest.

Bail has been set at $75,000 cash or bond.

Woodson does not appear to have any link to any known terrorist groups, nor a specific terrorist plot, according to a statement from the FBI, which is investigating the case with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, the Branchburg Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

However, the investigation is ongoing and these should only be considered preliminary findings, the FBI said.

It is possible that Woodson could face federal gun charges, but it has yet to be determined. Currently, the matter is being worked as a state case out of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

(Somerset County Prosecutor's Office)

BRANCHBURG, N.J. (CBS/AP) What exactly Lloyd R. Woodson intended to do with a cache of semi automatic rifles, a grenade launcher, night vision goggles and a map of a U.S. military base is not yet clear, say New Jersey police, but they arrested the 43-year-old on multiple weapons charges after he led them on a chase through the woods.

Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said Woodson was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle concealed under his green, military-style jacket when, shortly before 4 a.m. Monday, officers encountered him at a Quick Chek store in Branchburg, N.J., about an hour west of New York City.

As officers started to question him, Woodson fled on foot toward a nearby trailer park, Forrest said. Officers found him hiding in some bushes and tackled him when he tried to run away again. The officers used pepper spray to subdue him.

Forrest said the rifle Woodson was carrying had a defaced serial number and had been altered to fire .50-caliber ammunition.

When detectives later searched his room at the Red Mill Inn in Branchburg, they seized another Bushmaster .308-caliber semiautomatic rifle with a defaced serial number, a 37 mm Cobray grenade launcher, a second bulletproof vest, a Russian-made night vision scope, a police scanner, maps of a U.S. military facility and hundreds of rounds of .50-caliber and .308-caliber ammunition. They also found a Middle Eastern-style headdress.

the 50 cal was a caliber conversion package that fits on any standard AR15 chasis. it is a close range large caliber low velocity round that makes an AR15 suitable for hunting big game, not airplanes. it's a 300 grain bullet at 1500 feet per second. this is what an 1873 springfield in 45-70 was doing in 1870. nothing impressive. just a bunch of marketing hype.

tha "grenade launcher" was a cobray 37 mm tube for launching signaling devices and flares. it looks like a 40mm M203 grenade launcher, but can't fire grenades, which you can't buy, anyway. cobray 37mm tubes are accessories for "wannabes", and nothing more.

at a federal level, everything other than the defaced serial numbers is #######. the defaced serials can bring a sentence of 10 years each.

on a NJ level, failure to register an "assault weapon" is a possibility.

Woodson was arraigned on all charges against him: ; possession of a large amount of ammunition,

posession of a large amount of ammunition is not a crime, and never has been. in some states fire codes specify storage conditions for certain quantities, but "hundreds of rounds" does not fit the bill.

somethign wrong with this charge, either in the telling, or the citing.

Is "Possession" of a firearm with defaced serial numbers a criminal act or is the actual act of defacing the criminal act?

Is "Possession" of a firearm with defaced serial numbers a criminal act or is the actual act of defacing the criminal act?

posession is considered prima facie evidence, and will result in criminal charges when your house is searched.

if a person comes into posession of a gun that had a serial number, and the serial was defaced, they should dispose of it in one of several ways. cutting the frame on which the serial number was originally placed with a gas torch or chop saw or hack saw and throwing the section with defaced number away in a scrap yard is good enuf assuming that such cuts effectively disable the gun, and will leave the remnants for resale or keepsake. tendering the gun to an attourney experienced in criminal law for forfeiture to local police is also good, but can get expensive. tendering the gun directly to police is quite risky, and may result in charges designed to force the tendor to talk.

as for this clown, he is an amateur. the equipment tells us this. it is all standard gunshow stuff, with total value around $3k. a real pro wouldn't go so trendy, unless he was newly minted. a real pro would have either equipment that was a lot nicer, more esoteric, and more expensive, or would be a minimalist.

Official press release:

JANUARY 25, 2010

NEWS RELEASE

VIRGINIA MAN ARRESTED IN BRANCHBURG FOR WEAPONS OFFENSES

SOMERVILLE - Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne J. Forrest and Branchburg Chief of Police Brian Fitzgerald announced that police have arrested and charged Lloyd R. Woodson, age 43, (last known address) Generation Drive, Reston, Virginia with multiple weapons offenses following an investigation in Branchburg, New Jersey.

Prosecutor Forrest stated that at approximately 3:55 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2010, Branchburg police officers responded to a 9-1-1 call for a suspicious person at the Quick Chek located at 1296 Route 28, Branchburg Township, New Jersey. The caller stated that a black male wearing a military jacket was inside the store and was acting in a suspicious manner. Branchburg police officers responded to the Quick Chek to conduct the investigation. Patrolman Steven Cronce was the first officer on the scene and was able to locate and make contact with defendant Woodson. Patrolman Cronce conducted a field interview and noticed that defendant Woodson was extremely nervous. Patrolman Cronce also noticed a large bulge in the front of the defendant’s green military-style jacket. Defendant Woodson ran out of the Quick Chek at which time Patrolman Cronce noticed that defendant Woodson’s back was flat, which led him to believe that the defendant could be wearing a bullet proof vest.

Prosecutor Forrest stated that the defendant then fled on foot towards the Regency Trailer Park on Route 22. Additional officers responded to the area and began a canvass to locate defendant Woodson who was subsequently observed laying and hiding in bushes on the Regency Trailer Park property. Officers ordered defendant Woodson to show them his hands. Defendant Woodson refused to comply with the orders of the officers. Defendant Woodson once again began to flee on foot and was tackled to the ground by Branchburg officers. Defendant Woodson began to struggle with the arresting officers who had to use pepper spray in order to subdue him. During the struggle officers noticed that defendant Woodson was concealing a loaded Bushmaster semi-automatic .223 caliber (5.56 mm) assault rifle, which had been altered to fire .50 caliber ammunition, inside of his military-style coat. Officers were able to place defendant Woodson under arrest and a search incident to arrest revealed that defendant Woodson was wearing a military-style ballistic vest with a reinforced front steel plate, had four additional loaded magazines, all containing ball type and hollow point ammunition. This Bushmaster rifle had a defaced serial number.

Prosecutor Forrest stated that detectives subsequently conducted a search of the motel room which defendant Woodson was residing in at the Red Mill Inn, Route 22, Branchburg Township, New Jersey. Detectives located and seized from defendant Woodson’s motel room, a Bushmaster .308 caliber semi-automatic assault rifle with a defaced serial number, a 37 mm Cobray grenade launcher, a second ballistic vest, a rifle mountable Nightsight Illuminator NP75 (Russia) night vision scope, a police scanner, a military-style backpack, a map of a U.S. military installation and a map of an out-of-state civilian community, a Middle Eastern red and white colored traditional headdress, and hundreds of additional .50 caliber and .308 caliber ammunition along with military pouches and garrison equipment.

Prosecutor Forrest stated that defendant Woodson was charged with: Unlawful Possession of Weapons, second degree (2 counts); Prohibited Weapons/Armored Penetrating Bullets, fourth degree; Possession of Large Capacity Ammunition Magazines, fourth degree; Defaced Firearms (2 counts), fourth degree; Obstruction of Justice, disorderly persons; and Resisting Arrest, disorderly persons. Bail is to be set on defendant Woodson who will be subsequently lodged at the Somerset County Jail.

Prosecutor Forrest and Chief Fitzgerald state that their investigation is continuing and request anyone with information to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office at 908-231-7100, or the Branchburg Township Police Department at 908-526-3830, or the Somerset County Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477) or online at www.888577tips.org or www.scpo.net and click on either “Crime Stoppers” or “TIPS HOTLINE”. All calls are confidential.

NOTE: We are required by the Rules of Court to include herein a statement explaining that the charges are merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

As for this clown, he's an amateur, not because of his equipment, but because he does not have a profession where the use of weaponry is required. A professional is not someone who fails shooter's litmus test on weaponry possession and quite frankly, I have no idea what relevance any of this has to well, anything at all. Who cares if these weapons did not come up to some imaginary standard of Shoothismouthoffatthehip? Really, of all the stupid things people come out with...

Well, aren't you literal.

Yes. However in what context would 'as for this clown, he's an amateur, his equipment tells us this' make any kind of sense, really?
