We did not go to apply for my husband's driver's license because I was under the impression that GA will only grant the DL for the amount of time based on current Immigration documents (ie...90 days if requested with K-1 visa...).

Now, the EAD is in production...will this suffice to get his license without it expiring in 90 days or less?:blink::help:

EAD has an expiration date of 1 year.... so the expiry certainly won't be 90 days

YMMV

you can get it with the EAD but as they say it will expire in 1 year. If you go in with the conditional GC it will expire in 2. Guess it just depends on how long you can hold out without him driving, or if you want the hassle of going back in a year.

or when needed, you simply go back in and pay the renewal "fee" when you have a document with a longer expiration date.

In AZ it's like 4 dollars to get them to print out a new card. I changed my address, name, and got a new picture, and it was only $4, so really the only hassle is waiting in line.

Although Nik was able to drive for several months on a foreign license without being required to get an AZ one, I convinced him to get an AZDL soonish so that he could have ID to show people that they were used to seeing. Just makes life easier in general. Will probably renew it with the EAD and again with the GC, unless we have the interview scheduled already when the EAD arrives (*crosses fingers*)

You say that now. Wait till you have to make upteen trips to DMV and you get a little more pissed off each time.

What exactly does EAD say on it? Authorized to work in the US? Cause they want to know his residient status and I'm not exactly sure that will cut it enough for them. I've had way too many run ins with the DMV to know you almost never have exactly what they want.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Honestly, I haven't even ventured to find out. My ex-husband couldn't drive a lick...so by the time he was ready to finally take the test...he already had his greencard...so we didn't have that stress.

I was okay with waiting this time as well...but I don't think that will work out with my crazy work hours and long commute and gas prices.:crying:

I got my driver license here in California using my J-1 visa (which expires in 7 months) and SSN. All the jobs I would be interested in applying to require that I have it, so I went for it. They made me do the written and behind-the-wheel test, but I passed both and am now waiting for it in the mail. I intend to apply to have it extended when I get my GC :star:

If you go in with the conditional GC it will expire in 2.

I have a conditional GC and they still only gave me 1 year.

"Once immigration documentation is verified with USCIS, a Georgia driver's license or identification card may be issued with an expiration date that matches the immigration documentation expiration date, but no longer than 3 years. If there is no expiration date on the immigration documentation, a license/identification card can only be issued for a period of 1 year. The cost of the license/ID is $20."
