Possible W2 error in the last name

Hello again after quite some time!

Whenever I think I am done with bureaucracy, something happens.

I have the following problem. My last name, listed on my SS card and my green card, is a composite of my maiden and husband's last name. When I started working, I made SURE to give my employer the right name, and they have me in their files under that name, but for some strange reason, they decided to drop that maiden part and just leave the husband's part on my W2. When I told them that it was incorrect, they told me that it may be a bit complicated to correct W2 form immediately as it is kinda expensive for them. They say that they print big batches of W2s and it is not economical for them to print mine now. They also told me that it should not be a big problem anyway since there is my husband's last name, which shows that we are married and that they would correct my W2 if IRS causes troubles (and we want to correct it so IRS DOES NOT cause troubles, right?).

This all sounds a bit awkward for me and I wonder what you guys think.

it is all about the SSN being correct... if that is correct then don't worry

YMMV

As long as your SSN is correct on the W2 you'll be fine. I can tell you my husband received a corrected W2 for 2007 2 weeks ago!

File with the name you use and don't worry about it.

They need to correct it. They are responsible for making sure the W-2 matches the SSN and the last name. Failure to do so can result in them receiving a civil penalty.
