The problem has threatened Toyota’s reputation for reliability, particularly in the

crucial US market, where the carmaker made a quarter of its sales in the first half.

It has also drawn comparisons with Audi, the German carmaker, whose US business

all but collapsed in the 1980s over similar safety concerns.

American companies.

If you really are that careful with everything you buy, more power to you. But honestly spooks...we live in a global economy. As someone who has worked many years under various unions, I'm all for supporting American industries, but we can't do it through protectionism. Look at the label of your clothes...even L.L. Bean now sells a lot of products made elsewhere. From your household goods to your electronics...there's no escaping the fact that a lot of manufacturing is done overseas.

Toyota has had a few large recalls in recent times. It certainly could have an effect on their reputation.

I agree with that. I'd give it a second thought before purchasing a Toyota right now if I were buying a car. My first choice would the Ford Fusion.

For some perhaps. Being a former Ford fanatic, I got tired of repairing my vehicle while still making payments. This anomaly has not occurred for me with Toyota or Honda (Acura).

I know it's impossible to buy all American, but I try to the best I can. The Fusion is a good car. I hope people support Ford for weathering the financial storm without using government funds.

I'm not disputing that Toyota is a reliable brand. But stranger things have happened. GM once had 54% of the American market, now it's about 15%.

It's their second recall in less than 2 years.

Last year, Consumer Reports said Toyota was "showing cracks in its armor" and did

not recommend two of its most important US-built models - Camry V6 and Tundra

V8 4WD - because of quality concerns.

Not a fan of consumer reports.
