Hi all,

I went to Minnesota at Christmas to visit my girlfriend and her family for 20 days and left on the 9th jan. I have managed to take 3 months off of work as a sabbatical and have saved up $9000 in cash and am going to Florida for a surfing trip on the 13th feb 2010 and then im going to fly up to Minnesota for 10 weeks until the 8th may 2010 to spend time with my girlfriend before returning to the UK. I have booked a return flight to the UK. I am just very, very, very scared that I am going to be refused entry at security in Orlando as I have spent time over there at christmas. Should I bring bank statements with me and a letter from my employer stating I am coming back to work on the 10th May, or does that just make me look like I am guilty of something! I don't know if I am just being paranoid but would like some advise from people on whether I should bring any documents with me?

Thanks all

Johnny :D

Employer letter and home/apartment mortgage or lease are good ones.

A letter from your employer stating that you're on sabbatical and what date you're expected back at work is good. Proof of home ownership or a lease would help too.

The return flight isn't much help because everyone traveling on the VWP has to have one anyway.

I entered Miami (was supposed to be Orlando but the snow caused a myriad of travel probs!!) on Jan 6th. I have about 6 or 7 stamps in my passport showing the same entry point over the past 14 months.

I was asked the purpose of my visit and I said 'to run the Disney Half Marathon' - entirely true, just not the whole truth ;)

As additional evidence I took a reference from work saying I was still currently employed, a copy of my lease, and a credit card bill with a fat balance on it. But I didn't need any of them.

The advice here is good - don't volunteer any more than you have to, but if they ask, don't lie. Just be prepared :)

Don't be scared :secret:

Scared people coming to CBP are considered to be hiding/lying about something....

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Thank you every one for your replies.....I wouldn't usually be concerned it's just I have read all sorts of horror stories.....I've been to america a whole bunch of times! I'm just a lot more nervous this time as I will be there for 85 days....wouldn't that raise eye brows?

nobody can say for sure.... if the pattern of your behavior has been to spend more time in the USA than the UK you might be at risk... If the pattern of your behavior has been frequent short trips you might be OK...

The CBP officer will review the totality of the facts at the time you present yourself at the border... and then he/she will make a determination.... My guess is you have a better than average chance of gaining entry, but I am not privy to all your facts nor am I the CBP officer who will inspect you.

Not necessarily bad, but I think younger people get scrutinized more than older people.

Bear in mind that in the US people are lucky if they get 2 weeks vacation time a year so a 22 year old managing to get 3 months off work might seem a bit suspicious to the IO. Get your employer to write a letter explaining the sabbatical and the date they expect you back at work on company headed paper.

Do you own property or have a lease? If so, bring a copy of that too.

Other than that all you can do is hope for the best.

I'm sure you know this, but don't volunteer that your visiting her unless you are specifically asked by CBP. When they ask why you are visiting start with the surfing trip. No need to divulge more info then necessary.
