Josh Dobranski with his wife Denise and children Veronia, 10, and Brandon, 9.

BRANCHBURG — In this economy, Joshua Dobranski is supposed to be one of the luckier ones.

In July, he lost his job of six years as an electrician supporting the installation of radon systems, but, unlike so many New Jerseyans, he was able to find a new position in November with a Union–based company after four months of unemployment.

However, what should be a relief for Dobranski, his wife Denise and their two children has so far meant a new headache.

Dobranski is required as part of his position to take home a company van so he can easily reach jobs in Central Jersey. But the condominium development where the family lives, Cedar Brook at Branchburg, bans the parking of commercial vehicles, and those who govern the complex aren't budging on that rule.

Dobranski has until Feb. 10 to find a new place to park or the vehicle will be towed.

“I feel like we're going to lose our house if he can't work, or keep food on the table for the kids,” Denise Dobranski said.

The complex is located near an industrial area close to County Line Road. Aware of the restriction on parking commercial vehicles, Denise Dobranski said she discussed the situation with Joseph Mineo, a representative for the complex's management company, Taylor Management Inc., before her husband accepted the job. She said Mineo verbally approved the parking of the vehicle and later took its information for registration purposes.

“The main reason I took this job is because it was OK'd by the office manager,” Joshua Dobranski said.

...

The couple said bringing home the van is a critical part of Joshua Dobranski's job. If he can't bring the vehicle home, he may be stuck looking for work again, the couple said.

“I'm on call essentially, I'm an electrician that needs to be there for emergency purposes,” Joshua Dobranski said, adding the company was specifically looking for someone further out west to handle work in the region.

...

The Dobranskis also said other commercial vehicles have been parked on the property and suggested they could be the victims of discrimination. They live in affordable housing set aside at the complex for low and moderate income individuals, and they said they feel like they sometimes are treated differently because of that, a feeling echoed by other residents.

Ummm park outside the uppity complex. I own a home that doesn't have

an HOA.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I'm familiar with the area. The only place outside the complex is about half a mile away on County Line Road (referenced in the article) which has no street parking at all.

I own a home that doesn't have an HOA.

Definitely the way to go

Why are they an "evil" HOA?

They are enforcing the rules for the entire association. The same rules he signed up when he agreed to live there. The same rules that protect him and his property values when one of his neighbors suddenly decides he wants to park the Partridge Family bus in his driveway. Sheesh.

As others have said , don't like it, don't live in a HOA. I don't.

How about an RV cover over the van to hide it's commercial ?

Interesting idea. They should work on a compromise and allow him to park if he covered the vehicle with a tarp.

I am sure there are owners that use car covers and not get in trouble. It doesn't look bigger than a small RV like a van conversion or a small cab over unit. Does the complex have RV parking that is a little less visible ?

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I think that once a week, somewhere in this country, the President of a homeowners association should be dragged into the street and pulled into four pieces by lawn tractors and they should sell tickets to it. That would stop most of this nonsense.

FWIW, there is absolutley NO WAY I would buya property with a homeowners assoiation attached. NO WAY.

The HOA is not evil, the homeowner knew these rules when they brought the home in that community. If the rules didn't fit their life style then they should have looked in another community. These rules are voted upon by the majority of the homeowners in the community.

The home owners signed and agreed to these rules at the settlement table when they purchased their home, so now because he wants to have his truck parked in the community, the rules should be changed.

Gary/Alla... I am a president of a HOA and I don't created the rules the Homeowners do. All we as Board memebers do are enforce them. So if the homeowners wants to rules to be changes then they can go to the meetings and discuss how and what they wnat change. Now if only 25 homeowners of the possible 600 that are in the community show up. Then the President, nor the Board members are responsible for the lack of concern that is expressed by the homeowners. Try being on a HOA Board before you deemed it is the HOA's Presidents fault for the issues that some of the Homeowners now don't like or agree with.
