I was reading through some of the topics here and came across one that I found very interesting. It was about being able to work with your K-1 visa. Is this true? I have a link here that states that you don't need anything but your visa in your passport to get your SSN number, and once you have that you are free to work, correct?

No, not true anymore. I can't remember which of you two is the Canadian, but do you know that you can collect EI? Check out the pinned thread in the Canada forum.

I'm curious about this post and went to USCIS website to research. Last update is 11/30/2009 and can't read nothing saying alien with K1 visa holder can't apply for the form

Actually in the instructions name as elegible for I-765 Family - based nonimmigrant categories (K1 in that category) says you can file within 90 days from the date of entry but cannot be renewed after that one the following must be based on the AOS.

I don't really know about it since i just started with my K1 process but hopefully the information i can research can help others somehow and i check that for my future as well...

That's what says in USCIS site in the I-765 form instructions. Now i don't know if they need to update that and USCIS hasn't yet or what.

God bless

Moving to Working & Travelling Prior to Getting a Green Card forum as the question is regarding if one may work on a K1 visa before receiving one's green card.

You're right, it is possible for you to apply for the EAD based on your K1 status. Here's the catch: It takes about 60 days to get, AND it will only be valid up to the end of your 90 days - so only 30 days to work...MAXIMUM! May as well just throw your money away.

If working ASAP is a driving issue for you, and you haven't filed yet, there is still time for you to change to a CR-1 spousal visa. Then you don't have to worry about these things.
