We submitted the I-485 and I-765 at the same time last May and both were received on May 24, 2006. Mary Ann had her biometrics done a couple of weeks later in Omaha. We've been checking her online status, waiting for news of her I-765 approval. It currently shows processing dates in Omaha for applications received as of June 12 and only confirms a date of receipt - May 24. Today we received an NOA advising her of a September 22 interview date.

My question is this: Is it normal to receive the NOA for the interview prior to receiving the I-485 approval?

I think you meant to ask if it is normal to receive the NOA for an interview prior to receiving I-765 approval?!! I can only speak from my own experience which is similar to yours - my husband received his interview letter (interview is tomorrow) and no word as of yet regarding his EAD. The good news is that if you are approved after your interview, then you don't need the EAD. Seems that there are a few of us who this process has been moving quickly for some reason!

Good luck!

I've read quite a bit about this kind of thing happening.

It might be useful to find out if there are certain regions/offices where the EAD is processed fast, thus making it worthwhile applying for it, and those where the interview is scheduled before the EAD on a regular basis...although I am not sure how difficult it would be to do.

I didn't apply for EAD for various reasons, but I am certain it wouldn't have been approved quicker than the interview date I recently recieved for 11th September, which is 3 months from my reciept date.

Anyway, the nice thing is, you have the interview :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Good point. I'm wishing I hadn't applied for EAD. I am guessing we'll have the AOS approved in a few months, and my wife really has no urgent need to work, so i basically just wasted my money.

You never know how long AOS will take, so if you're anxious to work, it is usually a good idea to go ahead and apply for the EAD. Still, it would be nice if the EAD fee could be refunded in cases where the Green Card was received first.
