In terms of public perception? It's hard to say because back then, homosexuality was not something anyone openly admitted to. I personally think that public figures should be able to have a certain part of their life private and that the only time it is prudent to bring it into the public eye is when it demonstrates a compromise of integrity....and I wouldn't include public denial of an affair as such a compromise because that happens only when the affair has already made public - as in Clinton's affair with Lewinsky. My take is that Clinton denied the affair because in his opinion, which I share, it was nobody else's business.

Well both you and clinton were... and are wrong.

We are a nation of laws not of men deciding "I think it's private business so I will purger myself in front of a grand Jury because this stuff is private."

Thats why he was impeached, was disbarred and can never serve on the Supreme Court.

Got news for you buddy. Most things that end up being testified about in Court are personal and private.

Clinton among other things is reckless and stupid at times, he had a pattern of "coming on" to women he came across and under his charge.

Paula Jones had every right to prove this to make her case.

If you want to blame anyone, Blame Hillary, wasn't she the one that refused to "settle" the case early on?

Anyway you are sounding like a typical Hypocrite here, on the one hand you always rail on about protecting womens rights, on the other you excuse a Governor / President for feeling up the hired help.

Unproven, and highly unlikely.

They slept in the bed when they were both traveling around Illinois as part of the circuit court.

That was very common in those days, when men would share accommodation at a tavern or inn while traveling.

It does not imply homosexuality.

If those circumstances make Honest Abe a Homosexual I guess I am guilty too, as I have shared rooms beds, tents, blankets with guys.

So now you all know the truth about Ole Danno.

Yet you don't think it takes away from Jefferson's greatness...or any of the other presidents who engaged in extramarital affairs. Unless you use a different measuring stick for Democrats. Hypocrisy indeed.

Oh ok. Please continue with your sanctimonious hypocrisy.

While you accuse me of hypocrisy I think in these latest posting you have proved yourself to be something even worse Steven, you are a SLANDERER.

On the slimmest of evidence you have convicted Abe Lincoln of being a Homosexual and now you insist Jefferson Fathered children behind his wifes back.

Granted the Jefferson Charge has more weight but the verdict is hardly in and so I must ask: Why are you so quick to find fault in others when the evidence does not confirm it?

What is it about our historical leaders that makes you rush to a condemners judgement with them?

Here is some of the back-n-forth over Sally Hemings.

In 2001, the Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society (TJHS)[19] commissioned a study by an independent 13-member Scholars Commission. The commission concluded that the Jefferson paternity thesis was not persuasive. On April 12, 2001, they issued a report. The conclusion of most of the Scholars Commission was that "the Jefferson-Hemings allegation is by no means proven." The majority suggested the most likely alternative was that Randolph Jefferson, Thomas' younger brother, was the father of Eston, Heming's youngest son. (Note: It was not until the late twentieth century that Randolph Jefferson was ever proposed as a candidate for paternity of Hemings' children.)

Jefferson never responded publicly about this issue, but was said to have denied having a carnal relationship with Hemings in his private correspondence.[24][25]

Regarding marriage between blacks and whites, Jefferson wrote in 1814 that "[t]he amalgamation of whites with blacks produces a degradation to which no lover of his country, no lover of excellence in the human character, can innocently consent." Some historians contended Jefferson would not conduct himself in a manner contradictory to his writings.[26] A major twentieth century biographer of Jefferson, Dumas Malone, claims that Jefferson fathering Hemings' children is implausible, arguing that it would have been out of keeping with Jefferson's stated principles; however, the evidence and prevailing historical opinion are at odds with Malone's assessment.

I have not even checked the time-line to see if these alleged relations took place while he was in or running for the white house but at any rate, I and many others am not convinced either way and so I give his reputation the benefit of the doubt.

You can carry on soiling his name in confidence.

As a matter of fact, YES. If a collegue is having an affair and he asks me for money, the answer is NO, why would he pay me back if he doesn't respect his wife? So yes, I am consistent. Absolutely, except that politicians can confiscate your money and don't have to get your permission.

Who knew? Who knew? Are you kidding? You're kidding, right? John Edwards is one of the wealthiest men in NC. He has, no kidding, the largest private home in NC. I have nothing against being rich, poverty sucks, actually. But... He doctored his books of his law firm and paid himself minimum wage and then the rest in dividends which were not subject to SS and Medicare tax! Saving himself millions and cheating YOU. And now you are surprised he cheats on his wife? And then runs around and tries to hide it like he tried to hide his millions in income (from chasing ambulances and running up the cost of our healthcare with frivilous lawsuits!)

Really, do you libs ever come up for air?

Ah, of course, well there has to be one idiot who bases his behaviour on the percieved sexual ethics of other people, as if having sex outside of marriage is some divine line where one can place the good on one side and the evil on the other .

As for the blather about Edwards, I'm not surprised about his cheating, how did you work out that I am surprised from what I said? I am not surprised or not surprised, I am simply not interested, I don't care if he cheats on his wife or not in fact I really don't give a damn about him at all.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
